I'm Fuming - Comet sells "Extended Warranty" to disabled 90-some y.o.

this thread makes me laugh, the lady in question choose to go into comet. She was not forced she went in through choice. she had the right to choose what she wanted to buy and did not want to buy. Comet did not knock on her door trying to sell her products. The lady did not buy a warrenty nor a insurance agreement (as comet do not sell these) but a extracare plan. If the OP is so upset about this then your friend legally has the right to cancel the plan for a full refund (as long as it has not been used) for 45 days after original day of purchase. It is no worse then shops like superdrug/boots etc putting chocolate along the queues at tills hoping children pick them up and the parents buy.
And before you ask no I do not work for Comet but trading standards!
If you really do work for TS then may I suggest you learn how to spell warranty, to use capital letters appropriately and research the correct use of the word "an" instead of "a" etc. The nature of the work should include accurate report writing which may be evidential and so attention to detail usually becomes second nature.
To the OP - is it really worth following up on this? If your friend is as frail as you say then there may be more to be gained by letting this go. Do you really want to cause her any upset? In reality the company will most likely refuse to deal with you because of customer confidentiality or the DPA - they will want the customer present or a written agreement to process a refund of the policy.
Also, if you do cancel the extended warranty and then the TV goes wrong in, say, year 3 - will you buy her a new one to compensate for your interference which resulted in the loss of the original cover?:hello:0 -

Hi,
just a couple of things about this post....
"a disabled 90-some year old lady"
"old, obviously frail, wheelchair bound woman"
It would be more than likely that someone would have been wit the frail wheelchair bound lady at the time of purchase so they would have been able to advise accordingly.
" she did not need to buy this so-called warranty, because she is not well enough."
I was not aware that appliances purchased by ill people do not brake down.0 -

Personally, I've never had a positive encounter with any TSD.
They're probably sick to death of people complaining about everything thats perfectly legal as if it's against the law! They probably want to do the job they're surpose to do, not spending all day going round because people can't read things!0 -

what iwas saying was if she was so vunerable as the op made out she should have had somone with herReplies to posts are always welcome, If I have made a mistake in the post, I am human, tell me nicely and it will be corrected. If your reply cannot be nice, has an underlying issue, or you believe that you are God, please post in another forum. Thank you0 -

In my experience they very rarely actually know what the law is.0 -

I just spoke with an old friend, a disabled 90-some year old lady living on benefits, and I learnt that last month she went to Comet to buy a small television and they told her (or so she understood) she had to have an extended 5 years warranty for an additional 75 pounds.
Besides the fact that she could hardly afford to spend an additional 75 pounds, how callous, how heartless for them to sell a 5 (FIVE!) year extended "warranty" to an old, obviously frail, wheelchair bound woman knowing full well that the manufacturer's warranty would probably be sufficient for her and in a couple years time, should the television break, and should she need one, she could buy a new one for that money.
And I cannot even tell her that, in my opinion, she did not need to buy this so-called warranty, because she is not well enough.
I'm totally fuming!
Comet, if you read this: SHAME ON YOU!!!!

Hi Lawrence,
My name is Andy and I’m from Comet. I was sorry to note your unhappiness with the way your friend was dealt with in her local Comet store.
Neither Comet nor our colleagues would condone the selling of any service or product that would be a disadvantage to any of our customers. However, if your friend does not feel that the warranty is for her then there is an opportunity for her to receive a full refund of the service plan within 45 days after purchasing. Terms and Conditions of the cancellation are also issued on the service plan document. If she purchased this last month then there is still sufficient time for this to be resolved.
However there are definite advantages of the service plan which she may want to consider, such as covering the television if it breaks down for whatever reason including damage caused by mishaps. Also, there is the additional benefit of annual health checks on the television and unlimited free engineer call outs.
However I would like to investigate this matter further, therefore please can you send me an email using the link below with your friend's purchase details. I will then discuss this matter with the store manager.
