I bought two 19p plates from Ikea last time I moved somewhere, but then got fed up washing up a proper plate when I'd just had a clean cheese sandwich on it .... so next time I was out I bought a pack of 4 rubbery/plastic picnic plates for £1, which worked out better.

Often, washing up would be: One rubbery plate, one fork, one mug.

I use the same mug all the time (I only bought one), so I rinse that out each time I make another coffee.

I used to boil a kettle to do the washing up once every two days.

You can't imagine how this would sound to today's youth..... like going back to the dark ages. Hmmm though we might do just that, of course, if our street lights get turned off !!!

Anyhow, back to my first thought PN. With your easy grasp of thrift you should be employed by the coalition to demonstrate the finer details and excellent benefits of life in times of austerity.

I might even write to Dave and Nick to recommend you. :D

I can't remember ever arguing about how to stack the dishwasher, but then I can't remember him ever stacking it. That isn't to say those things never happened, though - it's a long time since I was part of a couple.

Stacking the dishwasher and unstacking it again is definitely faster than washing up by hand. But then I have quite a cavalier attitude to it. I only rinse a few things - saucepans that have had cheese sauce in them, for example. One thing that makes it not so worthwhile is if you have loads of "handwash only" items so you have to wash up by hand anyway, whether using the dishwasher or not. I don't. There are a few things (crystal glasses etc) that I would do by hand, but I hardly ever use those. For everyday, it all goes in. If the saucepan handles aren't as black and shiny as they were when they were new, I don't care - the time saved is worth it.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.
    :)
