We all know this board has had its share of racist and anti-immigrant posts. I thought the nice people might be encouraged by these immigrants who have just been walking from Birmingham to London and handing in a letter to the PM:
We British Tamils will be embarking on a Charity Walk called "Heart2Heart" from Birmingham to London on 02nd November 2010 to raise funds firstly for the British Charity "Help for Heroes" and secondly for an Orphanage in Sri Lanka. Many of us have migrated to UK and enjoy freedom and prosperity, which was, and still is, denied to Tamils in Sri Lanka. Therefore we want to do something in return for the country we have now migrated to, and show our gratitude and thanks especially to those soldiers who fought bravely and sacrificed their lives for the Freedom that we enjoy today.
We hope this walk will encourage different communities to come together, putting aside any differences and barriers.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

One last comment on dishwashers, I think washing up is simpler than the loading, unloading etc, adding the tablet & so on. Plus there is a small sense of self satisfaction gained from washing up all the gathered utensils, cleaning them, & getting them on the draining board.

Then, rather than get stuff from cupboards, just collect direct from the draining board.:)

Loathe as I am to start this topic, anyone started planning christmas shopping yet? I have a friend who has done almost all theirs, including wrapping!

I know I will have limited shopping time, & I'm not great at shopping to be honest. I hate meandering shopping, I like to know what I want, go, get it, & get outta there.

I also hate all the queues.

So I've reluctantly decided I need to start planning what to get for whom. Anyone else at this stage?

I remember once, on christmas eve, working at a place where there was this one chap, who was excessively laid back. The one time I saw him panic, was this christmas eve, where he literally dropped everything at approx noon, & ran out of the building complaining about the fact that he had done absolutely no christmas shopping, & he couldn't put it off any longer!:rotfl:

Davesnave, agree about the birdbath. I'd get one if it wasn't for all the cats round here.

Treliac, thanks for sharing the poem.:T

I want to get a guitar (or two) for my daughters 6 and 4 to learn on (or play with anyway). Given they may never get in to it I don't want to spend too much but then again I don't want them to be put off by something that through being cheap is needlessly difficult to play or impossible to make sound good. I have read some comments that electric might be easier to play but others say learn on an acoustic. Electric to me has the advantage of taking headphones...Then there is sizes - seem to be either half or three quarters size.

    Can anyone advise?
    I think....

I had a few friends who play/played guitar.

I'd go along with the learning on an acoustic. An electric guitar is, for me, something to progress to & experiment with once the basics have been learned. An additional problem with electrics, is you then start getting into amps, footpedals & other effects type territory. Which verges into anorak-land.

There is so much ease to an acoustic. It can be played anywhere. It is very flexible in the style you play. It isn't too heavy to carry. It doesn't require loads of other bits. And it sounds so nice. :)

You could go to the halfway house & get an electric acoustic?

Lady is a funny word. I prefer to be called a woman, because I definitely am one and I'm not sure I'm a lady. The ''lady'' is speculative and not always flattering, though not NOT fattering either. I think the application of ''lady'' might might be one of those odd ''middle classisms...'' like ''toilet'' or ''Pardon''. Friends of mine with the title ''Lady'' don't tend to use it...unless they acquired it through marriage...and then its noticable...e.g. Lady Nikki will never look right to me.

Oh good god, I'm turning into my mother, shoot me now....

I'm going to have some guitar lessons too...if I ever sort it out. we have a beautiful, beautiful quality acoustic here and it gets very neglected. I'm a little trepidatious (sp? in fact, is that even a word or just in my head?) but its a nettle I need to grab. I'm resigned to the fact now that the broken brain struggles too much to read a treble and a bass clef at the same time, and I fancy the challenge and a way to stay ''doing'' something musical now the thyroid is noticably ruining my voice. :(

Can anyone tell me: What is a Treliac / how is the name made up?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Well, over on the other site, she's called trelia, so maybe treliac is Trelia C. Trelia is a girl's name, I gather, although I've never known anyone IRL called that, and I don't know what part of the world it comes from. I don't even know which syllable should be stressed. :o

It's an anagram of 'article' and 'recital.'
