Loathe as I am to start this topic, anyone started planning christmas shopping yet? I have a friend who has done almost all theirs, including wrapping!

I know I will have limited shopping time, & I'm not great at shopping to be honest. I hate meandering shopping, I like to know what I want, go, get it, & get outta there.

I also hate all the queues.

So I've reluctantly decided I need to start planning what to get for whom. Anyone else at this stage?

I remember once, on christmas eve, working at a place where there was this one chap, who was excessively laid back. The one time I saw him panic, was this christmas eve, where he literally dropped everything at approx noon, & ran out of the building complaining about the fact that he had done absolutely no christmas shopping, & he couldn't put it off any longer!:rotfl:
    .

Yes, I've started. We're not giving many gifts this year :o but I buy cards in the sales in January so will get them done soon (I normally do them october/november). I've been buying bits and pieces for DH's stocking (another symptom of childlessness: the adult and pet stocking). We're only getting gifts for parents this year and some kids...nieces, friends' babies. Also I've been buying odds and ends that will keep for lunch for some time now, e.g. crackers to have with cheese, wine, panforte..it spreads the cost a little. I will get some mince pies made and in the freezer soon. We're hosting a small ''business and local'' christmas party but other than that it should be a quieter christmas for us this year.

I want to get a guitar (or two) for my daughters 6 and 4 to learn on (or play with anyway). Given they may never get in to it I don't want to spend too much but then again I don't want them to be put off by something that through being cheap is needlessly difficult to play or impossible to make sound good. I have read some comments that electric might be easier to play but others say learn on an acoustic. Electric to me has the advantage of taking headphones...Then there is sizes - seem to be either half or three quarters size.

    Can anyone advise?

Unless you are very very musical I doubt there will be much difference in the ease of play and the output at their age.

I've never seen half size guitars, so wonder if you can get them easily.

Both mine started on acoustic and them moved on to electric after about a year.

Yes, you can get them. Not sure how ''good'' they are, but not sure its such a big deal when convincing kids to enjoy music, something they can be less precious with is probably pretty important. I used to stick stickers on my first student violin...more fun than the ''better'' violin later that felt too precious.

One of the sweetest things I've every seen was a six year ol girl having lessons to play the alto sax with DH. I used to get a tiny foot stool and a cushion for her to rest the sax on.

we're considering, gulp, selling my piano. :( He's beautiful and I've had him since I was a tot, but he's old and has his original strings which are on there last legs: it can't be made properly in tune and with new strings he won't sound like himself any more, so it would be a good time for us to part. we'd get another piano, but something that can be played with other instruments and less...quirky. we also are thinking of selling a 3/4 size student double bass....its surplus to requirements and needs a little tlc which, while its ''extra'' here its unlikely to get.

Thank you treliac. :kisses3: I'm hoping the picture will get me an invite to MSE swingers night. However, it's proving more elusive than the illuminati. :)
