My own closedmindedness I guess.
Oh well, I suspect most of us would be the same...0 -

lir sweetie, do you think you might know asheron in rl?Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.

I know that a lot of people have been following the amazing stories of the miners. Thought I'd share my favourite as if it is true (it is in a letter from one of the miners) it is lovely:

I was researching digital stuff and wills etc last night ... ended up reading some bloke's blog; he'd thought about it and kept his blog with a "draft" post on it, that he kept updated... in case he died. It was to be published after his death - and he had died.

I had my parents asking about power of attorneys today....poor dad had got confused as I am the executor of their wills and he thought they were one and the same!
Apparently, if all goes wrong and they start to struggle mentally, I will also have the power of attorney and they now want to sort that out in advance (must admit, it makes me feel uncomfortable, even if they are trying to be practical).
Think I am going to have some reading to do so I can discuss it with them......We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.

It's straightforward enough. I did this with Dad, so I had an arrangement with his bank/BS and a special cheque book I could use too, but it never quite came to that.
Good thing to do. Many won't discuss this, so you are lucky, but if Mum is still fully compus mentus there may be no rush.
I was an only child and you aren't, so that's another thing to think about. How will your brother feel/be involved?0 -

It was easier back until late 2007, when EPAs were replaced by two different types of LPAs.
Property and Affairs LPA, and, Personal Welfare LPA
All our family got EPAs done just before the cut off date in 2007 before LPAs were brought in. One by a solicitor firm and the others for free at home, and appropriately witnessed/signed. Mine done on the final day before they were phased out, and date stamped by the Post Office.
New LPAs, I understand, are more complicated (to limit fraud) and expensive to set up (between £150ish and £500 with solicitors/professionals), and have to be immediately registered. Rather than only registered if needed to be used, with an older EPA. £120 for each type of LPA to be registerd, but suggestions those on benefits can seek to get that reduced (fee remissions).
None of us want The Court of Protection supervising our affairs and for anyone we have trusted (thus decided and selected in our EPAs) having to apply to them. And, although I've not done much reading into the subject, one story a year ago had the applicant angry with delays and charges being applied.0 -

Thanks for that.
Both my brother and sister (along with my parents), see me as the responsible, sensible one (yeah right!) and would rather not have the hassle.
I would rather not have the hassle but as the sensible and responsible one, feel it is my responsibility to have it!
If it came to pass, everyone knows that I would consult with the others first anyway because I am also seen as the fair one where everyone is treated equally and discussion on a way forward is king.
But POA is so much different to being an executor of the wills, their wills are easy...house is to be sold, no question of one of us living in it and everything is split three ways equally between us, deciding someone elses financial or health matters is another kettle of fish entirely.
Dopester - it was a letter from the solicitor who holds their wills who has suggested putting something into place given their ages (68 today and 70 just after Christmas). Mum is still fully compus mentus but dad gets a little confused now after his strokes and is easily taken advantage of (I usually have to supervise if someone calls trying to sell him something - he gets tied up in knots and then says yes).We made it!
