I miss treliac and wageslave too. At least we have lir back from her temporary internet-less-ness.

AIUI, the last miner to come up will not be alone down there at all. They've sent down three or four rescue/paramedic type people to oversee putting the miners into the capsule, and they're going to stay down there until all the miners have come up, and then come up themselves.

So yes, there will be some person who's alone down there for an hour or so while the previous person goes up and the capsule comes back down, but he'll only have been there a couple of days.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I've never used them myself, but I've heard nothing but good things about them from experienced server admins through to n00bs.

I've spent the day fiddling with some code a Russian wrote - because I liked his simple theme. And I think he made a bit up because I can't get one of the variables to change. I know I'm doing the right thing - and the site's not changing. Having invested 36 hours in getting it to the stage it's at I'm reluctant to start again looking for a good theme ... so s0d it, it'll have to stay like it is, a bit 'not quite right', which is how all my sites are.

Life's too short for running lots of different websites that all do different things, with different layouts and different looks.... I should have bought some theme making software a year ago, although I'd probably have been rubbish with that too. Getting a site to look right is my biggest downfall, it sucks all my time up so I never get to the promoting bit.

But, this year I've mostly been "tidying up the empire". I've gathered all my passwords together and now have a complete management system for my 700 logins, I can tell you where I logged in, when, why. I've documented my adserver zones across all my websites in about 700 lines of Excel. I've lost two separate domains this year and got them back again - one I then had to move to a new host, the other one I had to get transferred via the registrar. And now I have that one being transferred over to a new (3rd) registrar. I would like to get it hosted and up and running by next week as my "next project I've been meaning to get round to for the past 5 years" (since I registered that domain name) because I've now, finally found the perfect plugin :)

Overall, tidying up and sorting out has been good ... and for some reason my income's shot up. Not sure if it's luck or something I did ... but everything's on the rise this month... let's say 50% up over 3 months ago.

And, I passed my course... and in the same email the Uni have asked me to go in and do a talk to undergrads about "the stuff I do" - and we're just defining what form that should take. Probably £0 compensation for that. I'll get nothing out of it except to say I did it. I'll probably do 20 hours' preparation for a 2 hour chat and a 40 mile round trip .... but that's life.

I'm also 'hiding' from a property management guy who wants me to optimise his website .... except I know he's got no idea what that even means, and his site's a pig in a poke so I don't want to do it. So I'm hiding when he's in the road.

I wrote an article for a neighbour's business, she seemed a bit unimpressed at the time when I told her last week - but then came rushing over 2 days ago to say I was already outperforming most other sites, even though the work was new. I just smiled a bit and said "Yeah .... you wait until it ages, it'll rock".

On the window debate, our first house was reproduction Victorian (war damage) and had draughty, wooden, sash windows, which I loathed. I was so pleased to move into a 1930s semi, where I could have nice, white, no-upkeep UPVC.

Having said that, ours was one of the only houses in the road where the replacement windows came anywhere near an original 30s design, most people opting for the shop window approach on houses that were already a little over-provided in that respect.

Now, in our 'architectural graveyard' 70s bungalow, all the windows are new, sparkling-white UPVC. Again, this suits, as we don't have time to paint, and the sound/heat insulation is good.

I know, if we had a cottage, it might be tricky. However, not all UPVC is created equal. My FIL, though well past 70, is still quite capable of making his own windows in oak, which he recently did for some mullions at the back of his cottage. At the front, he installed specially designed UPVC, because the 'improvement' he could achieve by making his own was no longer sufficiently large to warrant doing so again.....and this is a guy who used to do restorations for Wells Cathedral.

I've used them for registering domains in the past. There were no problems, but I would recommend googling for coupons, since there are regular deals.

Haven't used them for domain hosting. They are supposed to be reasonable, though...

Our uPVC windows at the family home still look ok, but 15 or 16 years old. Handles have been wearing off a couple them, dropping off. Not easy to replace the handles with original type either (St Helens Glass own design specials), and also they were rivetted on, so had to drill the handle base fittings off.

So been replacing a few handles over last few months, and also added sash-jammers, to give windows extra security. Just want to say, jacknuts (screw-anchors) are brilliant, (where you don't have metal reinforcing in window/frame).

Drill pilot holes for your handle or sash jammer fittings - then drill a huge 8mm hole over each. Then insert a jacknut with one of these guns, and squeeze the trigger. The jacknut gets compressed in, creating a reusable, really strong, reusable fixing point for handle or sash jammer to be fitted securely.

As the installation process begins, the sleeve of the Screw Anchor collapses to form three or four legs, which grip the inside of the panel and provide a permanent re-usable Screw Anchor with a large blind side load bearing area.
Lir.. I hope you can find a much cheaper quote! Hope you'll seek other quotes! And you don't seem to have many windows up high that need doing either - for all the cost of scaffolding. If a ladder won't reach for the workers, maybe you could "lend" one of those vehicles with the raise-able box they use changing street lamps up high.

dopester, I will indeed seek other quotes, but I feel more and more gung ho about having a go myself. I had thought to reserve our labour for things with less finesse though. ;)

I've been looking at window locks new handles where needed too.
