I've stayed in the odd boutique hotel - pretentious name for basically small posh hotel, eg if you want posh, but don't fancy huge corporate 5 star, boutique is more intimate, individually decorated, more romantic usually. Usually a bit cheaper than large corporate chain hotels (though expensive for what you get... ;)). Often converted townhouses in central London eg we stayed in a lovely one in Kensington; had own private (small) walled garden, had breakfast brought to us in our private garden, suite with own lounge etc.

Oh, those were the days... (no anniversary on horizon to merit such excess now :().

    See:

for some lovely examples of boutique hotels (not cheap, though).

I love boutique hotels, though generally only when I get klingon status and can use DH's travel industry discount. Good luck with that one Pastures.

On a totally different subject, given the heated discussions here on immigration today, there's a really lovely thread in the Discussion Time section of The Arms that I thought I'd flag up:

I love boutique hotels. Its not a star rating diference to chain hotels, but they have identity of the place they are in, possibly the owner's vision..they feel individual and as a result have a stronger design or architechtural identity usually or just a feeling. The person behind the reeption desk will probably be the same the next time you visit. Boutique hotels have a sort of a glamour even the best chains just can't get, its what all hotels used to be in my imagination.

Incidently I stayed in a big chain posh hotel during my mse exile and they didn't even give a wee bottle of conditioner anymore. But they did have nice soap.

You'll have to nick an extra towel, if they're skimping on the conditioner.

In the interests of the eco-war they ask you to reuse them ''just like you would at home''. At home I have thicker towels than then ruddy posh chain, and my own conditioner and my DH's company didn't pay a huge figure to let me sleep there.

TBF I don't indulge in pay for view movies at home either (someone the lightening thief), have to make my own bed, and have no cool wafle maker with a little jug of batter waiting for me when I get up. I made waffles for DH's new boss.....I really like making them more than eating them:o

Sorry lir, have to ask, but what was DH's new boss doing in the room with you? My mind is imagining all kinds of scenarios ;).

I have 24 hours to write about boutique hotels.... I don't even know what one is. Did a Google, they seem to be "posh, pretentious, overpriced places with little furniture - possibly shoving the eco label and organic stuff in your face".

I can't muster enthusiasm for that .... I'll probably pull 3 out of the non-descript writing bag though :(

First one I found is about £400/night :(

Maybe I should run up there now and press my nose against the window ..... and see what posh people do in hotels, so I can invent the right words.

Boutique hotels aren't all expensive, I stayed in one for £75 a night with a proper fry-up. Good value that :D

It's just another way of saying the hotel has a theme instead of being a soulless box with the same furniture and all sorts. Generally, it's a small hotel which hasn't been purpose built into blocks. requires a bit of imagination and creativity.

    something like this
