I have had to make a complaint at youngest's school today (well left a message last night). He has a severe allergy to shellfish which is all noted on the school records, the school holds an Epipen for him etc but yesterday during a lesson, what happened to be on his table, not a foot away from where he was sitting but a plate of prawns.

Now the prawns sitting there wouldn't be so much of a problem (he can be in the same room) but to make matters worse, the other children were touching the prawns, then touching the desks, the pens, the paper etc and the possibility was then there that they could have then touched youngest.....which does produce a severe reaction.

Youngest tried to speak up to ask to move, he was ignored, he then went to move anyway and got told off and told to sit down (and was again ignored/told to shut up when he tried to explain), so spent the whole lesson with his blazer sleeves over his hands scared to move at all, touch any writing equipment or have anyone near him.

On speaking to the Senco this morning, she was absolutely shocked at prawns being in the class in the first place, let alone everything else as it is very clearly documented that youngest has a severe allergy and the last episode of someone eating prawns and then just touching a door handle which youngest then touched, ended up with youngest seriously ill and needing an adrenaline injection, oxygen therapy etc in hospital.

Think I am going to have a serious chat with them anyway as his support seems to be being withdrawn a little with the new intake of year 7 (they are now not following his statement completely), I know he is getting older and supposedly more independent but he isn't (he is 12 but has an emotional age of around 7 or 8 - terrible two's were fun at age 5/6!) and he is not coping at all well now..it has always been little steps over a long period of time with him, not gigantic steps all in one go.

He doesn't feel safe (and even less now after prawngate), and a youngest who doesn't feel safe is a youngest who doesn't sleep, closes down and is an absolute mare to deal with.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

An idea your lad's school might think about is having pictures of the kids with severe allergic reactions/other serious health issues on the staff room wall, with a v.brief note of what their needs are. We did this, and it was even reasonably effective for supply teachers. I think we only needed about 6 in a school of 325; too many and it would not have been effective, of course.

Hi Sue I was really angry for your son when I read this. I'm hoping carolt or one of the teachers hereabouts will read this note and comment. My thought is that they will have had to do a risk assessment on your son and that I would want to know what failed. I'd write a very strongly worded letter, but I'd want to make sure that I was aware of the school's language first so that it comes across that you know what you are talking about.

All I know about is H&S in libraries. Of course things can go wrong in libraries, but if they went wrong and someone was exposed to something even though a risk assessment had been done and the situation had already been flagged, someone's !!! would be on the line.

Thanks Viva, I didn't know if my feelings were an over reaction of an over protective mother but I knew it just wasn't right.

I am hoping the Senco has had words with the teacher involved but I decided to leave it until after the weekend to see what the outcome was...if nothing is forthcoming, I will speak to the head (as part of a school focus group, we are on first name terms hehe)

I honestly don't know what has happened in the school for them to take their eye off the ball so spectacularly this term, the prawn thing is not the only thing I am not happy with, his statement not being followed is an absolutely huge concern especially as I know how youngest reacts...on top of after speaking to them last term about him being in classes with all the noisy ones in the year (which he can't cope with) and them promising to find quieter classes, he now has a child with noisy tourettes (which youngest also has) in most of his classes making it even harder for him to cope!

Their poor classmates, not one but two children with the potential to be very noisy, especially when stressed...and they are both stressing the other out with their tics and noises.

    Hello :).

I've missed you lot a bit. :) Its getting old here in the Delapidated. We have only one serious roof leak it turns out, but the woodburner was declared unsafe this week. I only wanted the flue swept :(. Its about to get mighty cold to, innit?

There are loads of plumbers in this area but they are all busy. I have dozens of jobs for one, it gets boring turning the water on and off at the metres to save drips. :) We also hope to get stuff for a bathroom in the January sales. (If we agree floor plans by then).

I'll have loads of reading to catch up everyones news won't I?

Welcome back lir! It would be very fair to say we've all really missed you. Glad to hear that you're only in a one leak situation, though the heating sounds a bit dire. I've got a couple of electric plug in rads you're welcome to borrow if that would help out.

Hope to see you hanging about more often!

I will be about more now. :o:D Also took time out to spend with the horses this morning: leisure day! Its been a long hard slog to reach the state of controlled chaos in which we can now relax a little!

Thank you for the generous offer. I'll see how we go. My guess is we'll fair for a while yet, but its the airing of the house in the cold for condensation etc thats a bit daunting with no way of getting house warm again! we'll probably adjust priorities and move ''restoring open fireplaces'' further up the list :D
