    Hi,

Wanting to do Manchester (or Bolton?) to London (or St Albans?) leaving the afternoon of Friday 15 Apr returning Sunday 17 Apr. My end destination is St Albans, essentially.

    Cheapest found is £61 Man-Lon, £70.30 Man-St Albans

    No railcards or anything. Thanks

There's a £63.70 superoffpeak return from Manchester to St Albans via Sheffield. It is a bit slower though. 3.5 to 4.5 hours

Thanks... where do I find this?

Going off your idea of going via Sheffield, can I do Manchester to Sheffield then Sheffield to St Albans and back all on singles? Can get it for £54 then. When I'm looking on Virgin the singles are cheaper than the super offpeak returns.

When you buy a single can you still do any offpeak train or are you buying for that exact train?

I found it on the FGW site. Do the normal search for a return trip and at the bottom of the results is a button 'click here' for slower routes. Doing that will give you a list of fares the top one (I think) of which is 'route Chesterfield' Click it and it will show you trains on which it is valid

When you buy a single it depends what sort of single it is. An 'advance' single is only valid on the train booked. An anytime, offpeak or superoffpeak single is valid on any train meeting the time restrictions, no matter what train you have bought it for.

If you can get separate singles for £54 then yes that's fine. I'm assuming at that price they are advance singles so only valid on the specified train
  • I am looking to travel from London Euston to Glasgow Central next Friday or Saturday (15/4 or 16/4), However there are engineering works and prices look to be pretty expensive. Does anyone have any promotional codes I could use? I have a 16-25 Railcard.

You could check for journeys via Edinburgh, i.e. from Kings Cross up the east coast route (there are some direct trains to Glasgow, but otherwise you'll be offered journeys with a change at Edinburgh) - to do this when searching you need to actively specify Edinburgh as a 'via' point.

Theres some £57 fares on the saturday from KX or £65 from Euston on the 0605 departure and no changes.

Give scotrail a bell and see what they can do for you on the sleeper on the friday night - seat only

No need to call, you can check on their website - there's a £55 single available (seat only), so not really any cheaper than the day train.
(There are some cheap £39.50 seat-only tickets available on the Sleeper from London to Glasgow but these look to have sold out on that particular train - either that, or they were never made available on that particular train in the first place.)

Oh, and there's nothing showing up on their Bargain Berth's site either - but I'm not sure if there's ever any availability of these cheap berth tickets on a Friday night:
    http://www.travelpass.buytickets.scotrail.co.uk/BargainBerths/

Also, with the £57 fare from Kings Cross, you should be able to get a 10% discount on that if you buy it direct from the East Coast website (so £51.30) - though the East Coast site is down at the moment.
