I posted on another thread, but here may be better?

I need to get 2 adults and 1 child (10) from Exeter to London. Can buy a railcard if needs be, would prefer 1st class travel.

    30 May returning 31 May.

Would like to leave Exeter early (before 10am) and return from London after 4pm if possible, but am flexible on timings.

Anyone care to point me in the best direction. THank you.
  • Have a dilemma and wonder if anyone could help please?

My BIL failed his driving test and we are all going on holiday together on 15th May. He has it rebooked for 11th but if he fails again there will be no chance he will br driving oop north! We don't have the space for them in our car as we have 2 young uns so if he fails he will have to go on the train.

So looking for 2 adults (their DS is only 1 so assume is free?) from Chesterfield to Morpeth on Saturday 15th May and returning Saturday 22nd. I dread to think what they will pay if they book on the day at the train station. I have had a few looks round and I reckon they could do it for £100 return if they buy singles but I wondered if anyone knew of any split tickets they can get that will bring that down? It's an expense they hadn't planned on because they have a car and everything all sorted :(

Not easy to get under £100 for all three of them (yes, youngster goes free).

One way would be to get a Family and Friends Railcard.
This only works if you can still get one at £19.50.
Advance Singles for two adults and one child (yes, get a child ticket) cost £74.70.
So total inc railcard = £94.20.
Although the £19.50 railcard offer was supposed to run out at 31 March, some people are reporting that it was still available on 22 April here.
Use promotion code promo25 when buying railcard online and see if it still works.

Firstly, a Family and Friends Railcard offers no discount on First Class tickets.

I cannot find some of the fares that were posted on your other thread.

The cheapest first class fare outward is £85.00 dep Exeter St Davids at either 08:38 or 09:49. Both to Paddington. These are Advance Singles.

The return leg is best done from Waterloo at £52.50. Dep Waterloo 19:50. Again these are first class Advance Singles.

Interestingly, travelling on the same trains Standard Class with a Family & Friends Railcard, can be done for a total return trip for £68.75.
Ok, you need a railcard at £26 too. Get the railcard here and use promotion code promo25 which may bring it down to £19.50.

Train info from East Coast Trains website.

Thank you, no I had the same problem with the other train details, hence why I posted again here.

Actually I didn't realise standard would be so incredibly cheap. However, I am going to be leaving now around 3/4pm from London, so will have another look for the return. I really couldn't get my head around the splitting. Thank you for the info re the railcard too.

    Ok I am stuck again.

Trying to add zone 1+2 to my journey for London. I can add the zone but I am not sure what the ticket is. Will the tickets be for ALL day travel or just one journey? I want to have the cheapest ALL day off peak (sun and bh mon) travel for zone 1+2 at either end of my journey. Thanks in advance.

Could be that the quota of cheaper tickets had sold out in that time.

Nothing we have discussed so far has anything to do with splitting.
To help understand split ticketing, have a look at the video at the front of this article.

I don't think you can add London travel zones to Advance Single tickets.
My suggestion would be to buy one day travelcards for zones 1-2.
A travelcard gives unlimited travel for the whole day within the zones purchased.
You could use Oyster, but probably not worth the hastle.
VisitLondon has lots more info on Oyster and Travelcards.

If you can it will be a single tube journey for each portion. e.g. Birmingham to London Zones 1+2 (often referred to as U12*) could be into Euston, then Northern Line to Stockwell and back to Euston.

    Thanks dzug1

Mention of the Settle Carlisle route has confused me a bit as the fares I found seem to go to Inverness via York, Edinburgh and Perth. The route I got to come back was Fort William to Glasgow Queen Street, Edinburgh then Leeds or Fort William to Preston, Manchester then Leeds.

When would you suggest I try and buy the tickets incidentally? As soon as available (12 weeks in advance to the day) or otherwise?

    Thanks again

    M

If you are buying advance singles - as soon as they go on sale.

But if those advance singles add up to more than an off peak return - then don't bother. Buy the off peak return (for the same price) on the day.

Sorry for the delay - have been offline.
