Maybe I am too early for the cheap tickets?
With a Railcard, the walk-up Off Peak Return is only £35.70 (not via London).
You are a bit early for the really cheap stuff, but not sure if any are available on your route.

Can any of you experts assist with this one please?
Two adults travelling 2nd week in September after schools hols have ended. Tickets for the above required, leaving Leeds Saturday morning and arriving in Inverness later same day. Then we're walking to Fort William on Great Glen Way so returning from Fort William to Leeds a week later on the Sunday.
Priced up so far (dates used Saturday 3 July out & Sunday 11 July back) as follows:-
Leeds - Glasgow - Leeds £53
One way Glasgow - Inverness £10
One way Fort William - Glasgow £23
Total per person £86
Possible to get it cheaper do you think?0 -
Leeds - Glasgow - Leeds can be done for £45.40 anytime return - only proviso is you must use the Settle Carlisle route both ways.
I suspect you can't do the journey (through from Fort William) in a day on a Sunday though.
As to the other fares - the Fort William to Glasgow is anytime. An advance single of £12.10 is sometimes available
The Glasgow - Inverness fare is the cheapest available - and may not always be on offer
Leeds Glasgow Leeds can be cheaper than £53 with the right advance singles - depending on what's on offer on your dates. It can also be more..... An off peak walk on return without the Settle/Carlisle restriction is £81.70. Don't pay more than that.0 -
Thanks dzug1
Mention of the Settle Carlisle route has confused me a bit as the fares I found seem to go to Inverness via York, Edinburgh and Perth. The route I got to come back was Fort William to Glasgow Queen Street, Edinburgh then Leeds or Fort William to Preston, Manchester then Leeds.
When would you suggest I try and buy the tickets incidentally? As soon as available (12 weeks in advance to the day) or otherwise?
Thanks again

I am hoping for some help, as there always seems to be someone here who can come up with a great suggestion!
I am wanting to go with my 2 daughters (16 and 11) by train from Glasgow to London on 18th October, back on 21st October. I' ll have a Family and Riends railcard by then.
I know I'm too early to book yet, but when I was looking online to get an idea of prices, on the same days of the week at the end of September (which is as far away as you can book just now) it would cost £166. This is £100 more that it cost 2 adults and 3 children to go at the same time in 2007! Is there any cheaper way? Should I book as soon as I can - will the prices change at all?0 -

Info from East Coast Trains.
Do not book your tickets before the cheaper Advance Single tickets become available. They are never available beyond twelve weeks away, and often come out later.
