thanks Fitz...there'll be several vacancies at the same level (some people have left AND we're expanding) so I'm hopeful they would be staggering start dates/recruitment any way. Plus our org is quite specialised so I'd be fairly confident in my chances at the promotion (the job I filled when I started was due to the same promotion I want!). But it's all a bit theoretical at the moment, as not sure what I want right now!

(eta: and thanks elle/mel/everyone else. 2 other people in our org already do flexi so they're very open to those arrangements. I actually would love to go one step further and propose a split b/t office & work-at-home. It's complicated but basically my department is splitting off and becoming brand spanking independent on 1 April so there's quite a lot of wiggle room for new working patterns and new ways of staffing - since we're going from a 150 person org to a 20 person org ;). I'll stop boring you with details!)

Thats not too far from me. If you are coming down the A77 you drive past my house to get there (a few villages over).

Or if your going down the A76, I'm 15mins out your way. And DH likes scubbies :D

Aless is Civil Service (or an agency of/related to), the same as me and I am certain she would not have to return to her previous role, she could just start a new one straight off maternity leave.

For the first time in years, there have been loads of opportunities in my work. I am sooooo frustrated that I am missing out. However, they are mostly TRS posts (secondments), so need filled straight away as they would almost be over by the time I go back (although they almost always get extended). What’s worse, all of the good staff in my team have been seconded to better positions and I am being left with a team of no hopers. I could seriously cry thinking about it.

I am the same in that we have plenty of people on flexible working and they need a good reason to refuse it. You don’t even have to have children – anyone can apply so that it’s proper equality. However, the pattern I am asking for is a strange one so not sure what my boss will say! I still haven’t spoken to her. Think I will just e-mail her with my official request and cross my fingers that we are still friends!

Csh - I have no idea how people get by on just SMP! I go onto that next month.:o

.. Everything I said was based around the fact that she is requesting a suitable alternative and having very good grounds for having it granted..

But to the employer (aka the decision maker), an employee having a child is not "very good grounds for having [a change of hours request] granted". Yes, having a child gives an employee the right to request change but not for having that request granted
