Hi Worto,
It is possible to have a baby and travel light! However, the main things you need to know is will your pram/pushchair fit in the boot and is the car seat you intend to buy compatible with the car. I have a Fiesta (similar size I think?) which fits quite a large pushchair as long as the parcel shelf is out but then there's not much room left for shopping etc. We have two children at the moment and Dp has a Mondeo so if we're all going out for days out, holidays etc we take that and even then it's a squeeze! With the third on the way now we're considering a people carrier.
I should think seeing as this is your first baby (if I remember rightly) that the peugeot should be fine but when/if more babies come along you may need to upgrade to a bigger family car.

Hi
I currently drive a Ford Ka, With a 4 1/2 month old it is not a very practical car, it was fine before baby born.
I would reccomend you go for a 5 door model with a decent sized boot. I have a mamas and papas pliko p3 and that will only fit in with one half the back seat folded down.
unfortunatly hubby won't let me change car as me are moving house.
besides we got the car on a 3 year finance plan through ford with the option to change car or pay a final amount. (Good idea at time)

worto03 wrote:Anyone got any advice on a suitable car.
We currently have an old mini cooper & a pretty battered Rover 25 (2000 plate ) both of which need changing.
Thinking of getting rid of the mini & buying a 5 door 206 which seem to be going for about 5500 in decent condition (I have 3500 in a ISA so only a small amount would be some sort of loan) or maybe none at all if we get a decent amount for the mini.
Then waiting until thats paid off to get something else as a replacement for the rover.
Is the 5 door 206 reasonable for all the kit I've heard I'm going to have to carry with me?!?
Cheers,
worto.
My advice is to think ahead. The 206 may be fine if you only intend to have one or two kids at a push.
We switched our small car for a focus estate when my first daughter was born which has been great, loads of room for pushchairs, shopping etc, but now we've got no 2 on the way plus 8yo stepson who stays every other weekend, there's going to be very little space on the back seat what with the car-seats. We're now wishing we went straight for the people carrier.
Luckily stepson is over 135cm so we don't have to worry about a booster seat for him, but even so, he isn't going to be very comfortable squidged between two car-seats but something he's going to have to put up with unfortunately unless we win the lottery:rolleyes:.0 -
Thanks for the advice, I'll have a think about it.
I'll probably go for the 5 door 206 then in 1-2 years I can replace the 3 door rover 25 with an estate if need be. Gonna stay away from people carriers at the mo.
we have to park on the road so I need to think about how much space I take up and a car too big will just mean I can never fit it outside my house!
Cheers,

I'm going to try and manage with a baby in a coupe - Ford Puma. I love my car and can't bear to sell it and buy something practical. Am I mad?
Hubby has a huge estate car, so we all use that when the whole family goes out as he says mine is too cramped! Here I go again on my own....0 -

That's the "small car" I was referring to in my post above which we swapped for the focus estate. We only have one car though as hubby is a train commuter, so didn't have the option of having a second larger car, you might find it ok.
Broke our hearts parting with it. Tried keeping it for a couple of months, but it was too much of a struggle - used to be like the Krypton factor getting the pushchair to fit in the boot0 -
I borrowed my Dad's people carrier (Vauxhall Zafira) while they were on holiday, lovely Car but a bit too big for us with only the 1 baby,
the only downside i found to it was that if i did have more children i'd have to put the pram in a roof rack as the 2 fold up seats in boot take up the whole boot and aren't suitable for tall children. I put my 2 cousins in there (aged 11 and 12) they complained about being squashed.
maybe we shouldn't have cars, there are problems with every car.

I think you will cope with whatever car you have, although most struggle with multiple buggies. both my sisters drive corsas, and cope fine. I know my fiesta will be a bit of a squeeze as it is a chicane model and the boot is awkwardly shaped around the wheel arch.
One sisters husband has a projero, which struggled with a proper pram, and then a mclaren buggy at the same time.
To be honest, i know i won't use a pram so went straight for a mclaren buggy, and will use hubbies estate car for longer journeys and carrying more carp. For pootling local stuff, i will do my car, which will easily fit 2 car seats in the back.
I would love to have the puma problem. I've wanted one of them for the past 4 years.and i can't see me getting one now.
