reassurance required - ive just left the doctors and they said there was a small amount of blood and protein in my urine. the nurse referred to the doctor who is referring me to the early pregnancy unit -she is to phone this afternoon. i asked is this an indicator of miscarriage and they said no but im panicking what does this mean? its amazing how quickly you grow to love your little one because the thought of something being wrong is wrecking me.

have you bashed your kidneys recently (hurt your back) or had a uti? they're much more likely causes of blood and protein in the urine than miscarriage. The amount of blood is microscopic and unlikely to be seen with the naked eye (unless you've really hurt your kidneys by falling down stairs or something). If it continues then it may be a disease of the kidneys which would mean you'd need to be monitored more closely. The protein could be part of the same infection/injury or could be a sign of diabetes but there are lots of different proteins that can be found in urine so you'd need to be tested again to see if it's consistent and they'll keep an eye on it as again if you have diabetes then you'll need more monitoring during pregnancy. Neither are anything to be too worried about from one urine test but you will need to be checked out to see if they can find the cause. If you were miscarrying you wouldn't have blood in the urine... (unless it's transfer IYSWIM)

One of my urine tests at around 12 weeks was like this, but the rest have been fine. Nobody knows why I got the result, and my midwife said it could have been I was carrying a bit of a water infection that my body has dealt with before I got the full blown symptoms, or even a dodgy test stick! I would wait and get another test done before you start to worry.

For people asking about scans you pay for: I got a leaflet for http://www.babybond.com/
in the post this morning. No idea how good their services are, and haven't got any intention of using them myself, but thought I would pass it on!
Here I go again on my own....
  • I don't know if anyone is interested but Lloyds Chemists are doing a TENS machine for £9.99 was £39.99. Its called solpadeine Digital pain relief. Heres a link for it but haven't tried it myslef so don't know if its any good as only came through the door on a leaflet yesterday

    Hay fever question

argh just seen my GP who has prescribed clarityn (loratadine)for my hay fever after looking at the info about it - I then get the box of tablets from the pharmacist and it says very clearly on the box, Do not use if pregnant or breast feeding. I've now looked on the electronic drug database and it says clearly on there do not use if pregnant as safety hasn't been established

Now I know it often comes down to risks versus benefits but I'm not taking something that says very clearly we have no idea if it's safe or not so don't take it...
so as well as having a moan I was just wondering what other people have taken for hay fever (I'm sure it's a short list) as I can hardly breathe at the moment...

and relax... well after reading up about it I've decided to ditch the clarityn and use the flixonase nasal spray as even though it's a steroid there are some guidelines for it and as it's topical it's less likely to get into the bloodstream. If I need tablets as well (as I usually do) then I'll have to make do with piriton and just hope they don't make me even more sleepy than I am already

Did any of you have to/get to choose a hospital? I've posted on Emma's Diary and it seems nobody is in a situation like me  .
13 weeks and counting, after my 12 week scan I was told that I need to make an appointment to the 20 week scan and booking in appt with midwife at my chosen hospital. And there seem to be many to choose from - five that I can think of off the top of my head. I've visited two and have no idea what I am looking for...
What was important to you girls at a hospital birth??

PS First baby, I want to have it in hospital and stay there until someone teaches me how to handle a baby!!

PPS Everyone else at these open days was 35+ weeks pregnant, I don't get why I have to choose already...

you won't need to finalise your birthing plan until you're about 28 weeks but obviously you need to have an idea which midwife team you'll be under but I don't know if community midwives are necessarily attached to one hospital over another. Has your GP said 'most people go here but you might want to look here' or anything helpful? Our GP said we were with the blue group of community midwives as they're the ones who are linked with that practice but it may be different where you are. We only have the one choice so it's an easy decision but where I used to live it would have been a choice of 2 and I know easily which I'd have gone for. Talk to friends and neighbours and not just about maternity but the hospitals in general. Weigh up how long it takes to get there (for both midwife appointments and birth) and don't forget how long it might it take in rush hour.

I had my booking appointment back to front too but usually you'd have it before or around the same time as your scan so you need to have an idea soon which you prefer even if you then change your mind. Personally I would pick one with a good midwife lead unit and where there are likely to be more midwives available - although if you're in the SE there may be little difference between them.

thanks for words of comfort earlier! i went to early pregnancy unit today and the lovely doctor did a lovely scan and i saw my little peanut! the doctor was worried about it being ectopic but hes def. in the right place! i keep looking at the picture the doc gave me and even though babys only 1cm its amazing. im so happy to see him. i keep saying him - ive decided hes a boy even at this early stage.

as for picking a hospital i got to pick as well - i had to pick as soon as i went for my first appointment! i chose a hospital that is close to home and that has a midwifery unit - which is what id like (well id really like a home birth - but that doesnt seem likely) so midwifery unit is next best thing.

Justie, i use this homopathic hayfever tablets and have used them for years they cost about £4.50 and you get 450 small chalk like tablets that melt on your tounge. you take 4 at a time. i used them throughout my pregnancy with my daughter. you can get them from health food shops or boots, They are called new era hayfever and allergic rintus and come in a blue and white round tub.

    Hope it helps
