DH brought DS from nursery a while ago and said they told him they've had a case of slapped cheek disease. Nursery know I'm pregnant, so they warned that it might affect pregnant women.
So here I am, worried like hell. Can't do anything about it until tomorrow, so it's going to be a fun night.
I really really don't want to be dealing with this right now.
Best wishes, Dormouse. Haven't heard of the condition myself but know that I'd be upset if I was in your position.
Are you able to speak to your midwife or GP, just to get some general advice? They might be able to put your mind at rest slightly.
This pregnancy business isn't plain sailing, is it!0 -

I'm really worried.

I've always thought slapped cheek is something fairly non-sinister, but now I've loked it up on the NHS Direct site and others, it says that it could be really dangerous if you're under 20 weeks pregnant (I'm 17 tomorrow). Basically it could cause miscarriage or stillbirth.
Apparently 60% of people are immune to it, but unless you know you've had it, you don't know whether you're immune or not. I don't think I've had it, so would need a blood test to find out if I'm immune. (I suspect not as that would just be my luck. I found out in my last pg I wasn't even immune to rubella for some reason.)

Doormouse sorry to hear of your problem..can you phone the NHS Direct line for some advice..? even if its just a bit of reassurance or to find out exactly what your g.p needs to do tommorow..
I had a similar situation when one of my friends anouched she had shingles...
phoned the direct line who were v.nice to me and made me feel less like a silly pregnant woman..
luckily all was ok for me..so keep your chin up0 -
Sorry to hear about your situation Dormouse. I hope the MW and GP can help you today and put your mind at rest. I had a similar thing when dd got chicken pox, gp was wonderful and rushed through all the tests and i was fine. Fingers crossed everything goes well for you today. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Personally I don't know, but I would imagine that diarrhea is more likely a sign of late pregnancy (and impending birth).
Take a test. MS, tiredness, weeing and missed monthly are all signs, but could mean other things too. I had three of the four, and was properly MS minutes after taking my test.0 -
Thanks for everyone's good wishes.
I'm feeling a bit better today. I've been for a blood test to see if I'm immune, but won't get the results until Thursday pm at the earliest.
From what the MW and the nurse said, even if I did get it, the risks for the baby are quite small, but are nevertheless there. My pregnancy book is quite dismissive of the whole disease, whereas some websites quote much scarier statistics. Once again, it's a case of different people saying different things
I am feeling a lot calmer though, and trying to be reasonable. My dilemma at the moment is whether to send DS back to nursery - they've just had the one case and once it's been confirmed, it's not supposed to be contagious anymore, but I'm still worried.
I'm supposed to be working this afternoon - Becles and izoomzoom will know what it's like - so am desperately trying to reschedule the jobs so that I can keep DS in.
Phew, what a life! :rolleyes:0 -
Glad you feel a bit happier. Fingers crossed for Thursday.
I'm waiting in this afternoon for my midwife coming to write my birth plan and check out my bedroom etc., as I'm hoping for a home delivery.
She should have come yesterday afternoon, but got called away on an emergency, so I've had the job rejuggling to do too! Here I go again on my own....0 -
HI, regarding slapped cheek disease and other things like that, from experience i know that it is sometimes best not to jump on the internet and search lots of sites for information. It can be very misleading and sites can contradict each other leading to more confusion. The internet is great but sometimes a little knowledge can be very dangerous.now mum of 4!!!0
