My tip: forget about weeing on sticks and checking mucus. Just have lots of good rumpy pumpy fun all month long and let mother nature do her work ;)

You can get too hung up and stressed on working out when the right time to do it is. You end up tense and you don't enjoy it, or you feel obliged to do it as the time is right but really you don't feel like it because you've had a rubbish day at work or don't feel well or whatever.

You're more likely to concieve if you are relaxed and having fun, than if you're tensed up and doing it just for the sake of it.

I think I concieved the night Sunderland put 3 goals past Leeds at Elland Road, and my mind wasn't even on baby making that night. Sorry if that's TMI :D
Here I go again on my own....

    Hi,
Does anyone have any experiences of giving birth at a midwife-led birth centre? I'm booked into one, because I love the idea of the intimacy of natural birth, but I'm not 100% determined to have natural birth either. I'm still weighing up all the pro's and con's, especially since it's my first baby (my friends and family think I'm mad!) and my sister had a horrendously difficult labour (more than 40 hours, with epidural, etc.) As I approach the 3rd Trimester I'm starting to worry that I won't be able to bear the pain and ordeal of the labour. Would love to hear what you all think about this, either way.

    Hi Babitee

I nearly gave birth at a midwife-led birth centre. Like you I was a first-timer. Imogen arrived on Boxing Day, so is just 3 weeks old.

I only spent a few hours at the birth centre in the end (see previous post for all gorey details!) but they were fabulous! It was 7am Boxing Day and just me and hubby in our own room, the only people there, half-watching crappy tv and getting through my contractions. I used a birthing ball and had gas and air at this point. I found it very intimate and will treasure the memory of those hours. I also used the birthing pool for a couple of hours but eventually had to be transferred to hospital as baby was back-to-back and her heartbeat was a bit fast. Plus there was a query about infection as my waters may have gone a few days previously (still don't know whether they did!)

In my humble opinion the things to think about are:
    - what kind of birth do you want - assuming you get it!! I didn't want the assumption of people interfering the whole time, I just wanted to be able to get on with it, which is why I chose the birth centre.
    - pain relief - what will you have access to and what is plan B if you need more? My birth centre isn't attached to a hospital so I got a ride in an ambulance. Others are just a case of push you down a corridor.
    - plan B - what if you can't go/stay? There are millions of reasons why this could happen. I still went to the local labour ward to look round so things wouldn't be unfamiliar (good job!!)
    - Be realistic - this is not your choice. Baby will come when he/she wants in the manner he/she wants. As a control freak I found this hard to come to terms with, good job I did though! You may want a water birth with candles, whale music and no pain relief, but end up with an epidural, c-section and baby delivered to cheesy Christmas carols! You just have to be prepared for it all to go a different way.

My friends and family all thought I was mad too - but don't let that put you off. You need to be comfortable with the choices you make, such as they are, in order that you can cope as best you can.

I always said that I wanted to do as much as possible myself and without pain relief, but that I wouldn't be slow to ask for it if I thought I wasn't coping. In the end I wasn't coping and was only able to gasp "Epidural, now" as they admitted me to hospital, in between sucking on gas and air! I'm not ashamed though, about that or about the fact I ended up with a c-section. I did as much as I could myself and in the end the consultant decided I wasn't going to be able to deliver naturally.

I say go for it if it's what you want. We still maintain it was the right choice for us and I'll definitely go there again if they'll let me (I may be high risk now and not get a choice :()

I can recommend these as they worked well for me when we didn't have any success after a year of trying naturally. I got mine off e-bay from various stockists - pm me if you'd like to know which sellers I used.

Good luck to all who are TTC.

I got my ov sticks off ebay from fertility friend. They were really cheap, worked and arrived really quickly.

On another note has anyone got any advice for morning sickness? I have been throwing up and diarrhoe for last 36 hours. Feel terrible.....

sorry you're still feeling down about it all Emma. I can't really say anything that won't end up sounding trite but hang in there and here's hoping for the best :grouphug:

I have friends who swear by ginger biscuits. Or ginger tea (stem ginger left to steep in boiling water as if you were making tea) but then others say it just burns on the way back up. I have to try and eat at exactly the right time or else I can't eat or I'm sick but it doesn't always work. Try to keep your fluids up even if you can't do anything else and if you're feeling at all dehydrated call your GP immediately.
