    Hi,
I just bunged mine in the slow cooker with a can of full fat coke and the lid on and cooked it for about 8 hours, it was delicious! Great value for a midweek meal or 3 as we had it that night, the following night cold with egg and chips and for a few sandwiches as well.

    Enjoy :)
Ok, thanks.I've emptied some of the coke out and filled it to about a quarter of the way up the side of the meat. It's not looking particularly appetising at the mo with raw onions floating about but I have faith! Nigella's recipes have never let me down. Her 'girdlebuster' pie is a big fave in this house.

OK chaps, I have got a small gammon (420g) and a can of coke. Never done this before, can somebody give me a fool proof recipe? Thanks very much :)

Did you try and carve it as soon as you took it out of the SC? I cooked it in the SC, finished it off in the oven and then cooled, wrapped in clingfoil and left overnight in the fridge.

i found this the first few times i did meat in my SC now i take it out when it's done but leave it to cool before carving and it doesn't fall apart as much

although i did a whole chicken the other day and that is the one and only time i will do it- despite putting onions on the bottom so the chicken didn't disintegrate when i went to take it out it completely fell apart as was soggy so went straight in the bin  i will def stick with pork in coke in future it never fails me and will definitely be trying in with cherry coke!

i wonder if duck in fanta will be an alternative to duck a l'orange! :rotfl:

Yeah, finishes it off in the oven, but as it was for today's lunch I couldn't leave it overnight. Will def do that next time. Don't get me wrong, it was delicious, just didn't look all that great.:o

  • I managed to get the smoked joint as it was the only one left. I soaked it all day in water (apparently gets rid of some of the saltiness) then spread honey and mustard over it, wrapped in tin foil and roasted for 2hrs. My DD's had it for dinner with salt and pepper wedges (also on offer in Tescos) and sweetcorn. My youngest proclaimed 'That was the nicest dinner i've had in ages!' Hooray - success.

Does anyone have any hints on the best way to cook it if you don't have a slow cooker? I usually just stick it in the oven with a lid on at about 180oC for an hour or two, however long it takes depending on the size of the joint.

Would it work just as well to cook it on a lower temperature for longer in the same dish with lid? If so, how would it compare to slow cooker timings/temperatures?
An ordinary oven can be used as a slow cooker to some extent. Just put it in liquid and cover in tin foil and cook on the very lowest setting you have. Should be ok for 6 hours or so left unattended. I always did that before I got a slow cooker ( the s.c. is probably more economical).
