Right, I am back with my test from the 2 hams that I cooked last night, boiled for around 20 mins per 1lb plus 20 mins.
Tesco Ham £3.50 for £1.2kg. Cooked and sliced 640g = 54p per 100g.
Finest Ham £10.55 for 1.6kg's. Cooked and sliced 840g = £1.25 per 100g.
The Tesco ham was a bit saltier than the finest ham but my husband said the finest tasted a bit bland. The finest tasted a bit smoked although we had bought the unsmoked one. The Tesco one was much easier to cut, the Finest fell into lots of bits on the slicer and it feels the drier of the 2.
There was more fat on the Finest ham, a much deeper rind and fat.
Was the Finest worth the additional money?? Not really. I am going to stock up on the £3.50 hams for the freezer I think. I will get one from the butcher to compare but ina few weeks - I've got loads of ham to get into the freezer now!!0 -

I know I'm a bit late with the answer, but have just being reading the thread. You will know when its cooked just stab it gently with a fork and it will slide into the joint very easily.
Another tip for MSER's who have found it salty. If you steep it in cold water overnight, it will take all the salt out. I prefer cooking meat on slow rather than high in the slow cooker. Takes a bit longer but its always delicious. Hope this little tip helps. Sally0 -

No offence but that sounds vile lol, I only ever cook it in coke or just slow cooked and always have it with mashed potato and cabbage. Even the kids love it.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0 -
