Best gammon ever

Options
Tesco are selling smoked and unsmoked gammon joints 1.2kg for £3.50 instead of £7.

This is the best gammon I have tasted. Cook it in the slow cooker for 4 hours and it carves beautifully, so tender. Serve with broad beans and pease pudding. I just add a cup of water to the slow cooker and it cooks in it's own juices, giving it a lot of flavour.

Thanks, this beats the Co-op offer that's on at the mo. (priced at £5 if I remember...)

We add a cupful of dry cider to the slow cooker rather than water - adds a lovely apple-y flavour, & baby carrots cooked round it in the cider are good, too.

I cook it in a large bottle of cheap coke - not the diet one - (nigella recipe) and that works well too.

I have tried cooking these in the slow cooker before but I think I have cooked them for too long, about 8 hours on low.

Can someone please tell me what they cook it on if only cooking for 4 hours, high or low?

    Ta.

I cook mine on low for approx 9 hours as I put it in at 8.30am when I go to work and take it out about 6pm when I'm home.

Is this proper gammon , because when ive checked the labels they tend to say made from bits of pork stuck together ( ok not the exact words lol , but thats what they mean )

Does anyone have any hints on the best way to cook it if you don't have a slow cooker? I usually just stick it in the oven with a lid on at about 180oC for an hour or two, however long it takes depending on the size of the joint.

Would it work just as well to cook it on a lower temperature for longer in the same dish with lid? If so, how would it compare to slow cooker timings/temperatures?

Well that is roughly what I do but it falls to bits when I try to carve it. I end up dishing out chunks instead of slices.

Have a look at the Nigella coke recipe, it's not only for the slow cooker
