Why? Cos its the same as if I accidentally input a digit wrong and paid money into your account, you know it is not yours so if you spend it I can take you to court for both theft and fraud, if you moved it and tried to hide it. Theft by finding is the legal term...
It was never yours in the first place. Same applies to the case of the couple finding a suitcase of money!

Thanks everyone for all the light-hearted banter tonight!
Am sure I am getting more knowledgeable by the day - although I still have a long way to go!

Yea tell me about it - I nearly fell off my seat when I read that! Granted it was in Aus - but there is similar here in the UK, at the end of the day you cannot just keep £20k that you get credited in your bank - no matter how tempting!:D

Shocking eh? lol
So going by the theory of 'finders get charged'...the guy who found an original Bill of Rights in the back of a picture frame - which he sold for a couple of million dollars which then went on to be sold for about 8 million dollars, could have been charged with theft?!Started PADdin' 13/04/09 paid £7486.66 - CC free 02/11/10

But surely the bank can't just take it back out without your say so? It's not off-setting...it'd be taking (their) money out of your account?
MBNA once credited my cc with about 500quid, I phoned and told them to take it out and give it back to whoever owned it...but the person that paid it in was at fault, not me - if I was a selfish greedy cow I would have kept it:rotfl:

No. It was not financial gain was it? Ok, finders keepers is all good and well, but when you get credited money into your bank that you KNOW is not yours, you're breaking the law when you spend it....
Hey, i'm just telling you my knowledge on it, i'm no expert lol.... but if you found a picture or a bill of rights, then yes you could retain it and ask for reasonable reward - look at the guy who found the treasure on his land? He has to sell it to the museum commission (crown trust whatever) but he gets paid for it - as it is his find.
Too late for this - pleeeeeaase enough already!:o:o:o:o

No the bank cannot dip in and remove it but the actual owner can take legal action recover it. If the bank pay extra money in, they could freeze your account pending legal action to recover it but most do dip in and square the account at a later date....2010 - year of the troll

He bought a pic at a 'yard' sale because he liked the frame and then sold the scabby bit of paper he found in the back of it for a fortune!!
