Huh? Is a replacement battery for a Palm Pre free? No. £30 buys you not only battery replacement on an iphone but everything replacement for a whole extra year with apple care (via ebay) and this is the only cover you need (not buy this cover and that cover lol, its just one cover, apple care)

God no, you've got me totally wrong. I followed the Palm Pre from the very very beginning through all the rumours, press conferences, US launch and everything after. I couldnt wait to get my hands on one! When I finally did it was a huge let down. As i'm sure you're aware the return rate on these handsets is immense and I can understand why. Palm had such a good opportunity with this phone and it didnt deliver.

No matter what you say about the build quality of the thing it isnt up to scratch, it feels cheap (hence the lower price) and if that slider is rock solid then out of the 5 or 6 Pre's ive seen and used then you're very lucky. Every single one i used had lateral movement which was whack.

The OS is slow compared to the 3GS, just use one side by side and see the difference.

Bluetooth file transfer has also been available for years on the iphone via another cydia app lol.

Yeah Apple likes to restrict things but a 10 second jailbreak and you're free to customize and let the thing FLY! It really is that simple. You connect the iphone to your computer and press one button to jailbreak, seconds later its done and your free! Who cares if Apple don't give you these features as stock when its that simple to get them!

And lastly of course......the App Store vs Palm's :rotfl:

I wish the Pre was a contender for the iphone but as I said earlier there is only one slight competition to it and thats the N1.

Oh and I really don't care what the competition does it was just the title of this thread that made me laugh out loud when i saw it was referring to the Pre, bless it.

Never said the battery was free and th esize of an app store wouldn't make me buy one from the next. Most of the time a battery has packed up it has been covered or had a new one sent out.
The reason for the thread title is that both O2 and other outlets have seen a rise in the number being sold, mainly for the OS. This comes from a customer of mine who runs and owns a mobile phone shop chain. He has seen the Pre pick up and sales of the iphone drop off as people wait to see what
the new one is if there is one but people expect it to do more than have a camera on the front and bigger memory. if it doesn't do something out of this world and something so amazing you need to pick your jaw from the floor then people will question the price.

I did think long and hard about a Pre or an iPhone and the price was of getting the phone, the tariff, insurance and then extended warranty was too much.

Complete tosh lol just read this http://www.tomsguide.com/us/palm-pre-sales-iphone-android,news-5955.html to see how the predictions for sales were trounced to say the least!

The Pre will die a slow painful death and every iphone (no matter what Apple include) will fly off the shelves like hot cakes. I think the proof of this is the 3GS, not that much different to the 3G but still people went mad for it lol

Yeah, they raised the bar with video capture didn't they, as if its a first!

I doubt it will, Apple will be a victim of their own success, price themselves out of the market and leave people trying very hard to get out of contracts to get the next one. The iphone has done very very well, it's had a 3 year head start on others. I for one will never get one, they are overpriced for what it is. Take away the apps and the iPhone is nothing.

As for your link, the Pre sells and it keeps selling so expect to see Palm around for a while and their OS to be a very big hit.

Sorry The industry seems to think otherwise.

    http://www.mobileindustryreview.com/2010/01/palm_pre_has_apparently_sold_just_220_units_in_ireland.html

Apple is a premium brand and can (and does) command premium prices. Palm is not.

Putting the Pre and iPhone on the same tarrif, was silly. The Pre was bound to lose. On a £30 PCM contract the Pre costs more to buy than an 8GB 3g or 16gb 3gs iPhone, it's cheaper on a £35 a month Tarrif than the 3gs but the point remains. Palm CANNOT postition it's price point as a premium brand, it's got no market clout and it's not fashionable.
Given the Pre on a low monthly cost tarrif is more money you can't really say the apple is more expensive.

O2 are even having to bundle the touchstone charger with it to try and boost sales. Apple have *never* had to do that, they sell as they are.

I can tell you love your Pre, but the industry thinks is going south fast. They are estimateing Pre/Pixi plus sales 50% down on expectations
    http://www.fiercewireless.com/story/palm-cuts-revenue-forecast-sales-slump/2010-02-25

The brand has not got the cache of Google or Apple and it's pricing is too expensive. A sim only Pre from Expansys is £510, a Sim only Nexus one from Google is £350 (although shipping and tax may increast that) and a PAYG iPhone starts at £349 (3g) up to £549 for the 32GB 3gs.

I don't see the other UK networks rushing to sign Palm up when it stops being an o2 exclusive. Question is will anyone buy the Plus as I don;t think it will ever get released in the UK. Would it have been better on a network that did not push all the marketing clout into the iPhone? Maybe, but it wasn't and its history.

Thanks gjchester seemed to be banging my head against a brick wall in this thread. The Palm Pre is a sad flop and it together with web os was Palm's last chance at survival......will it survive, experts think maybe not.

I guess if i was locked into an 18/24 month contract or paid a high price for it sim free then I would try and fight its corner but its like putting a Bantamweight against a heavy weight compared to the iphone and this comes from a Palm fan who really wanted it to work for them!

Can't belive Palm has even resorted to offering free flights to get people to sign up with the Pre lmao http://www.palmpreflightoffer.co.uk/ How desperate!

Makes no odds to me if they do go under but i very much doubt they will. The new OS is too good to see it fail.
Whilst Apple are busy trying to sue everyone who brings phone to market it will leave the door open to the likes of Palm Google and the rest to knock them off their pirch. The next iPhone can't be that great if there is one or they wouldn't be having a go at everyother phone maker. I'm not a fan of Apple and the way they treat people.

If i'm wrong i'll be the first to say so but don't write them off just yet. I understand that there are many die hard Apple fans out there and i am just not one of them.

They've had just as many, if not more suits against them recently than they've launched against others. Nokia in particular, who seem to think any GSM-based device infringes their patents.

I'm sure they've got enough money to be paying their lawyers and their product designers.

TBF though, take away the app store and you just have a very good phone, the thing that makes the apple such a style icon is the app store; clearly other companies think so as all the other major manufacturers are relasing 'app' strores for their os's.

I don't think they will... every year they release a (barely) new version of their products, ipods especially... and thye are still going strong

I for one agree that apple have a questionable marketing strategy where the consumer really doesn't come first, but as long as they keep releasing such innovative products, they can keep doing that and many people will still buy their products

I do think the iPad will flop though

Ithink Android has real potential to knock apple of their perch; the nexus one isn't the phone to do it though....
