There is talk of Vodafone taking it on and that would market it better.

The latest 1.4 update shows again that the OS is better than the iPhone.

Doubt it. Vodafone's next marketing push will most likely be the Nexus One that they are rumoured to get in April. That will sell on the Google connection,

The Iphone sells as it's a fashion item, the Pre is unfortunalty not.

I used to have a Palm Pilot III then a Palm V, fantastic bits of hardware but they lost out to the Windows CE PDA device (WinCE had colour screens first) which has now vanished as phone PDA's take over. It's not about how good it is, it's too little too late to take much of the market. Lets face it you think smart phone and you think either Android or iPhone. Windows Mobile has had it at least until the Windows 7 phones appear and Nokia lost the plot a while ago to Blackberry in the business market.

I've used it in store and my initial impressions were backedup, too small and very little feedback.

Granted, it was only on a model, so maybe the keys are more responsive IRL?

Very much so as is the touch screen.

lol, obviously not an iphone user. The Pre interface is so slow compared to a 3GS! I was following the Pre from the very very start and so dissapointed when I got to use one, total FAIL!

I did look at getting one butr the costs are just silly and being tied to a 24 month deal is not for me.

People went nuts when Apple released video caapture on it but they forgot about the whole, i'll have to fork out a bomb to have it. Palm released an OS update for it and if the battery goes wrong on the iPhone then again a new handset possibly.

I did use one for a few days and hated the fact that you have to close an application down to use another one and you can't share info. The touchscren keypad is horrrible for typing text messages and emails

Arhh that old chestnut. Actually the iPhone 3GS is totally amazing at multi-tasking i.e you don't have to close an application to open another you can have loads running at the same time and it doesn't slow up at all. Backgrounder is the app for that (cydia jailbreak of course) and why not use pro switcher to have the exact same Pre style 'cards' system of changing between open apps. Before u go on about jailbreaking it dosent void your warranty or change anything in a bad way about your iPhone! Press restore in iTunes and it's completly back to standard again lol

As for the iPhone keyboard u must be taking the pee pee. The Pre keyboard is one of the most dissapointing things about it. It's frickin tiny keys with horrible 'tactile feedback' esp the space bar. Sure the iPhone takes a few days to get used to but when u have it's just as fast if not faster than a physical one.

The iPhone battery is covered for 1 year under warranty then hey why not get an apple care pack off eBay for another years complete hardware protection directly with Apple i.e 20 months down the line something is not right Apple will just replace it with essentially a brand new unit. Cost on eBay about £30! Not bad at all

The Pre had such promise to be the only phone to challenge the iPhone and was let down by poor build quality (how's you're shakey slider lol) rubbish keyboard and worst of all sluggish OS!!!!

The only real iPhone contender is the Nexus One.

Oh and video recording has been available on the iPhone with excellent quality for nearly two years (since the launch of the 3G) Cycorder is the app for that (cydia again folks haha)

But there you go...buy this cover and that cover! If a battery goes you should just be able to replace that and not the whole unit!

I would disagree strongly re the OS being sluggish. Webos is a very very good OS and lots are keeping any eye on it. The keyboard is just fine for me and the slider on mine is fine, had mine since day 1.

Sounds like djrobmac used an early model and didn't want to like it. I've watched my Pre (no shakey slider!) since launch day get better and better. My dad has an iPhone 3GS and it has the ultimate edge over the Pre in speed on some stuff, but why are you comparing to that, when the Pre costs the same as the plain 3G?! That's unfair.
I find a physical keyboard far, far better than on screen. Can you send a text whilst walking and not walk into a lampost?! Not with an onscreen keyboard, as you can't touch type! Some Blackberries have the best keyboards, but the're bigger. Pre took 8 months to get video recording via software update. iPhone took 3 years, and you had to buy another!
djrobmac has kindof made my point for me about multitasking. The iPhone 3GS hardware is totally capable of multitasking. Great. Except the makers don't allow it. It has bluetooth too, but you're not allowed to transfer files with it, just like I could do 5 years ago on dumbphones! As a Mac (and iPod) owner, I have to say that Apple's attitude with the iPhone stinks, and I find the Pre to be a much better phone.

They'll never let you send files with it. They want you to buy it!

My wifes battery has been grief and swapped out in warranty, so I can understand why a removable battery seems a good thing but I've never bought a replacement battery for my phones over the years I just tend to replace the phone as something new and shiny comes along.

Huh? Is a replacement battery for a Palm Pre free? No. £30 buys you not only battery replacement on an iphone but everything replacement for a whole extra year with apple care (via ebay) and this is the only cover you need (not buy this cover and that cover lol, its just one cover, apple care)

God no, you've got me totally wrong. I followed the Palm Pre from the very very beginning through all the rumours, press conferences, US launch and everything after. I couldnt wait to get my hands on one! When I finally did it was a huge let down. As i'm sure you're aware the return rate on these handsets is immense and I can understand why. Palm had such a good opportunity with this phone and it didnt deliver.

No matter what you say about the build quality of the thing it isnt up to scratch, it feels cheap (hence the lower price) and if that slider is rock solid then out of the 5 or 6 Pre's ive seen and used then you're very lucky. Every single one i used had lateral movement which was whack.

The OS is slow compared to the 3GS, just use one side by side and see the difference.

Bluetooth file transfer has also been available for years on the iphone via another cydia app lol.

Yeah Apple likes to restrict things but a 10 second jailbreak and you're free to customize and let the thing FLY! It really is that simple. You connect the iphone to your computer and press one button to jailbreak, seconds later its done and your free! Who cares if Apple don't give you these features as stock when its that simple to get them!

And lastly of course......the App Store vs Palm's :rotfl:

I wish the Pre was a contender for the iphone but as I said earlier there is only one slight competition to it and thats the N1.

Oh and I really don't care what the competition does it was just the title of this thread that made me laugh out loud when i saw it was referring to the Pre, bless it.
