iPhone........watch out!

Wow am i glad i kept hold of mine.

Remember with the first iPhone.......it didn't have video recording on it and if you wanted the video recording function you had to buy a new handset?

Palm have just released their update and with it is the video recording software so you don't need to buy a new phone. You can also upload to you tube and facebook. This update was done over the air, a WIFI or data connection.

Also noticed that in the app cat their are 3D games, monopoly, Need For Speed and Sims3.....for free!

Can't wait for the paid apps to hit next week too. iPhone.........you may wanna watch your back!

Does it have a fully fledged and stable SSH client as yet? I could get a Pre on my current tariff (600 mins/unlimited o2-o2/1000 texts/unlimited web) which I will pay £30 per month for when my contract ends (currently paying just under £6 a month for it, but as we all know o2 are crap for upgrades now and the tariff im on surpasses anything they have for £30 today, not least because of the two bolt-ons).

Im really interested in getting a Pre to replace my workhorse HTC Universal (640x480 Windows Mobile 6 pocket-laptop with a perfect screen and keyboard but starting to show its age CPU and RAM wise (only 64MB and 620Mhz X-scale), however I desperately need SSH for my business, and PuTTy on Windows Mobile does this perfect.

Also, did they sort an on-screen keyboard yet, or at least one when using the phone in landscape mode?

WebOS has soooooooo much potential with it being Linux, but its as though there isnt an awful lot coming through atm, in terms of applications, at least from a professional point of view (it seems okay if your a kid and just spend all day tweeting and facebooking).

If you want to use it for business then it will work very well. Don't quite know what you're on about with the techno talk but the email client is very very good and the colander works very well too. http://www.palm.com/uk/en/business/pre-index.html

No on screen keyboard as of yet but from looking at Precentral.net there will be one released soon.

I would say the Pre is aimed at the social user and the business user. There are some useful apps but keep in mind that as when the iPhone came out apps arfe limited but now EA Games have released Sims3 , Need For Speed Underground and Monopoly expect a rush of apps even more so with the paid app cat in a week or so.

Have a look at the Palm website http://www.palm.com/uk/en/products/phones/pre/index.html

Also the video editing function is very very good where you can edit your video, save it or upload to You Tube and Facebook.

Look at the Nokia N900 if you want a business phone, it has huge potential.
  • Disagree, look at what the Webos platform can do with respect to calender, contact and messaging and it is far far better than what the iPhone and Nokia can do.

Have a look at a demo and you will see just how could it is. http://www.palm.com/uk/en/products/phones/pre/index.html#video

With the iPhone you can't replace the battery, and as before the updates to the Palm OS are just amazing.

Th Nokia is interesting, because it is running Debian at the core, and the OS is more true to its core than WebOS. However, Nokia are very lame nowadays, they seem to be years behind everyone else when it comes to phones in general (Symbian was good when I had the 6600 8 years ago, but in reality t should have been put out of its misery 3 years ago, yet all their new phones are running it) and they are very slow to update and enhance phones.

As much as id like the N900, the Nokia badge being on the front worries me, because we all know how crap they are, nowadays and how they have stood still whilst technology passes them by. Nokia in the late 90's and early 00's were an innovator, now they just sell phones simply on name, to the simpletons who know no better.

Doesn't really matter if no one wants to buy it!

Very nice, but I never mentioned the iPhone... I wouldn't get one for business if I needed that as it has no keypad.

The N900 however, has much more potential... Maemo operating system and it allows the user root access so they can essentially doanything they want, I do agree that the Palm is a much better 'out of the box' business solution though.

I agree that the symbian operating system sucks big time, however the n900 is actually running the linux based maemo system which has great potential. The N900 allows it's users root access sothey can make the phone what they want; it's actually more of a computer than a phone - ideal for business.
  • just get a blackberry they do everything for buisness job done

If you read my post, I know this already (as per the Debian comment, as Maemo is based on Debian); it could be the perfect tool for my business, as my business is based around Linux servers so it should interact with them seamlessly. However the fact it has Nokia on the outside is the bit that worries me; I also require other "good" and powerful applications, it's nice to think that anything that runs on my home install of CentOS would run on Maemo, but in reality, that is likely to be far from the truth. With it being Nokia, a lack of 3rd party support is now inevitable, Nokia themselves won't want to know, and take-up of the device will be painfully slow, which will limit what the open-source community will be bothering to do with it. If it were HTC or similar, id probably give it a whirl, but im not interested in risking it, and then finding out im stuck with a phone that is in theory the perfect device (aside from keyboard) but in reality useless.

Android is the overall future imho, but it's just not ready yet. I like the interface on the Palm Pre a "lot" and WebOS is too running Linux. My HTC Universal is like a pocket-laptop - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTC_Universal - but as I say, it starts to get a big bogged down with me running Windows Mobile 6.1, it only has about 26MB RAM free after OS load and after about 6 applications running at once, it can start getting really slow, the X-Scale CPU in it being 5 years old does not help, even though I have it overclocked lol.
