If you read my post, I know this already (as per the Debian comment, as Maemo is based on Debian); it could be the perfect tool for my business, as my business is based around Linux servers so it should interact with them seamlessly. However the fact it has Nokia on the outside is the bit that worries me; I also require other "good" and powerful applications, it's nice to think that anything that runs on my home install of CentOS would run on Maemo, but in reality, that is likely to be far from the truth. With it being Nokia, a lack of 3rd party support is now inevitable, Nokia themselves won't want to know, and take-up of the device will be painfully slow, which will limit what the open-source community will be bothering to do with it. If it were HTC or similar, id probably give it a whirl, but im not interested in risking it, and then finding out im stuck with a phone that is in theory the perfect device (aside from keyboard) but in reality useless.
Android is the overall future imho, but it's just not ready yet. I like the interface on the Palm Pre a "lot" and WebOS is too running Linux. My HTC Universal is like a pocket-laptop - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTC_Universal - but as I say, it starts to get a big bogged down with me running Windows Mobile 6.1, it only has about 26MB RAM free after OS load and after about 6 applications running at once, it can start getting really slow, the X-Scale CPU in it being 5 years old does not help, even though I have it overclocked lol.
Yeah, I missed your comment... if you want to use SSH I guess you're gonna want something reliable... security and all...
I agree that android is ther future, I've got my GF to go for the Milestone
If you are a windows mobile/andorid person why not look at the TC desire (?) obviously the HTC HD2 is QSD processor so wont struggle for power
Why not a BB?0 -
Unfortunately, o2's range of handsets at present is dire, they have pumped all their money into the iPhone (no-no as it can't multitask) and the Palm Pre. They have the HD2 which I like a LOT and it does seem the natural upgrade with it running WinMo 6.5 and the apps im using now all being compatible with it, but they want stupid money for it and it has no physical keyboard, onscreen Keyboards are okay to a point, but when trying to type really fast or long emails, I don't like them, they dont have any feedback or enough accuracy. Ialso have strong concerns with regards o2's lack of firmware updates for the HD2, HTC have released 1.66 firmware which fixes some quite big bugs, but o2 are (according to an email from HTC) the only company who have a custom firmware on the phone (things like tethering etc are removed) and HTC do not provide, or allow, o2 handsets to be updated to their own firmware (you put in the serial and their system won't recognise it), and therefore you have to rely on o2 to provide updates, and so far they have ignored all requests from users.
I need to stay with o2 because of the broadband and email-text services I have etc, and also because I can rely on their network coverage, never had a problem even up the top of Snowdon etc, still had a full GPRS connection. Id stay with the HTC Uni but for the fact they will not give me a decent sim-only deal now, so I am thinking I may as well go for something different and funky and with a bit more power for future applications - provided it does the job. The Pre interface for the mostpart looks amazing, and the only alternative to the HD2 on o2 for me, and the only handset with a Qwerty keyboard that isnt a Blackberry.
Maybe I should just get one, I know there is basic SSH support via a Java applet (it is in Alpha though, the disclaimer states that we should be thankful its even in a working state lol), and then sell it for £200 if it can't do what I need, or I don't like it.
I have a month to decide, seeing if o2 release any other handsets or offer me any decent deals first.0 -

You should try being onorange, mate. :P
This may be a silly question, but are you upgrading through o2 or are you also looking at external websites? e2save etc
I rarely upgrade via orange anymore and I still get very good deals, plus you can have anhy phone you want, regardless of network availability.
You could, in theory get a non-o2 htc hd2. I have a Sony Ericsson C905 whihc I got from e2 save and although it's on Orange I got a non Orange handset, so no ghastly orange sign or software.
I can't help thinking that the N900 would suit you down to the ground, it is designed to multi-task... Granted, I wouldn't touch a Nokia, last smartphone I had with them was appauling.
Keyboard onthe palm pre is tiny, thats one thing that bothers me.....0 -
No SSH clients on the Pre as yet, but one is bound to come. If homebrewers can port the Linux versions of Doom and Quake, surely they can port an SSH client!
I've personally installed the on-screen keyboard on my Pre from the homebrew apps, so yes you can have it if you want. I've never really used it. Just type in portrait, the keyboard on the Pre is great. Ignore anyone who thinks it's too small that hasn't actually used it. I had a Treo 680 before, with a similar but bigger keyboard and it's dead easy to get used to. Way easier than an onscreen one.0 -
Much as I'd like it not to be the Pre's a dead duck now. If anyone but o2 had it it may have been marketted better, as it was they concentrated on the iPhone and the Pre just got forgot about. The Google nexus has had better press than the Pre, and the deep pockets of Google, who are pushing it.0

Palm need to get it out on all networks. Not everyone is an iphone fan and thEY should take advantage of that.0 -

Totally agree, like all palm devices they will disappear, not always because of marketing, mainly they dont make great phones and after having a pre for a short period i havent changed my mind.0 -
There is talk of Vodafone taking it on and that would market it better.
The latest 1.4 update shows again that the OS is better than the iPhone.0 -

I've used it in store and my initial impressions were backedup, too small and very little feedback.
Granted, it was only on a model, so maybe the keys are more responsive IRL?0 -
