That doesn't apply to cable installations. The Virgin cable goes directly into the cable modem - there is no wiring in the house that Virgin is not responsible for. (unless of course the dog chewed it
)
There is no other place to plug a cable modem into other than the Virgin cable itself.
The phone does not matter in the case of a Virgin cable modem.
That's always a possibility but I don't think it would cause this issue.
A cable modem connects to the wall Isolator or in some cases, a splitter & then runs direct to the cable modem thru either a RG6 or RG49 COAX (TV)cable.
If your ETB on the outside of the house is at the front & your Modem is at the rear of the house, the signal levels may be too weak by the time it reaches to the modem.
A competent Service Tech will be able to diagnose this & low signal levels can be cured by either changing the Tap & Port in the street cabinet or by fitting a reverse line boosted between the modem & the ETB.0 -

Glad you're getting somewhere.
Do me a favour though - edit out your cable modem MAC address from the previous post.0 -
Just had a look at your newsgroup thread - I see Virgin support are suggesting you have a spyware issue.
Might be a good idea to download HijackThis and post the log either here or on the Techie stuff board preferably on this forum - only get the log and post here, DO NOT try to fix any issues yourself first.
Malwarebytes is a good prgram to use.0 -
Krissy,
As Malwarebytes has come back with no risks found I doubt it's a spyware issue causing you slow speeds.
I posted on the Cable forum for you and I'd like you to check out the reply there. Might be good if you register and reply there as well.
It has been suggested that your downstream SNR of 23.4dB is far too low and should be at least 35dB.
Spike - can you confirm?

I don't see why Virgin suggest this other than out of typical customer service ignorance or the tendency to give a stock reply to any customer reported problem of a certain kind.
I believe the modem itself is synced with Virgin's equipment at a very low speed. This is not symptomatic of spyware but symptomatic of poor line quality with poor cable joints or other interference on the line.
If the OP's problem was with spyware then her Sync speeds would be the full 10Mb or whatever but when she tried to use her computer everything would run at a crawl due to all the spyware programs sending out junk emails etc that would be tieing up all her computer's CPU and memory.
However I did suggest that her brother's computer or some other computer in the household was connected to the cable modem to make sure that the same low speeds were also being reported in terms of modem sync rate and by https://www.speedtest.net
It still seems to me that the problem is almost certainly with the physical connections from the house to Virgin's equipment.0 -

More or less depending on her cabling lay out & signal levels at the ETB & Modem point.0 -
