I normally buy either Persil or Fairy non bio washing powder but am wondering what the difference is between this and supermarket own branded washing powder. I do a lot of washing as there are 5 of us(3 under the age of 10!!!) and am desperately trying to bring my supermarket bill down and think that this is one area where I could reduce the cost but am reluctant to change brands unless I know that what I"m changing to is as good as what I currently use. I"d appreciate any help/advice re this.
I am in a similar boat and buy those massive 90 wash boxes ( you can get them on market stalls or car boot sales or in a cash and carry) and I half the amount recommended ( by drawing my own line on the measuring cup) and it has saved me a fortune. We are a sensitive skin family and if we switched brands we'd all know about it, so I hope that helps a bit.

Old age isn't bad when you consider the alternative.
  • if there's a large company churning out loads of products then u can pretty much gurantee that its for named brands and supermarket own brands.
I worked for premier foods who make jams, honey's, cereals and pickles.
A product is made on a line which is used for all brands, but the recipe can differ (amount of salt, sugar etc) also quality of ingredients usually differ due to finished price.
I will say that supermarket own brands(not value) aren't very different to named brands, in some cases they're superior.
Ironically at one point Tesco's jam used the same recipe and quality of ingredients as Harrods own jam, just smaller price-bigger jar. (not sure if its still the same).
I know this as I worked in the quality dept, saw the recipes and did taste testings.
Although when u work in a factory making food it puts u off a lot of things, when u see whats involved and whats used in some cases, its not always as nice and clean as u'd like it to be.

  • In this day-and-age of digital cameras, this may not be of interest any more!

However there are only a few camera film manufacturers out there.
anything "made in Italy" is probably by 3M
anything "made in Germany" is probably AGFA
anything "made in Japan" is probably FUJI

Having developed an allergy to most "multinationals" products soap, soap powder shower gel shampoo cleaning products etc I did a LOt of research and guess what I uncovered all of these products are made from petrochemicals, the waste from oil refining. In particular have a look at your moisturisers ,shower gels, after shave balms, shampoo everything.and you will find mineral oil or paraffinium liquidium or sodium lauryl sulphate as the main ingredient, why because this is cheaper than water there is so much of it.
These are one of the most sensitising ingredients for people with excema and why anyone would want to put paraffinium liquidim ("Baby Oil"!) on their skin or their babies is beyond me.Try using Hemp oil ,Olive oil,Rosehip Oil ( cold pressed)on your skin you will be suprised.
Same with bar soap used to use imperial leather can't now biggest ingredient in all bar soap sodium tallowate (cow, pig, goat fat you are washing yourself with lard!) a host of preservatives (to stop it going off)and parfum to mask the lovely (sic!) natural smell.
Real soap is made with olive, palm oil or other nut seed oil and has little or no preservatives.
Now I say If I cant eat it I wont use it.
Ecover make fantastic cleaning products which are all vegetable based and super biodegradable,I use their washing up liquid as shower gel with no problems.
I buy real vegetable soap from health food stores.
    Skincare from Weleda www.weleda.co.uk

I think that Weleda baby cold weather cream -is like a cheaper, healthier version of Elizabeth Arden 24 hour cream! Sainsbury's even sell it on their pharmacy counters and it is all natural- no sles or anything. SLES is banned in most US states for being cancer causing!
Green and minimal chemicals is the new black- I know a fair old bit about sustainability, specially energy and transport stuff. If I can help- please ask!

This product recall in December tells us that Pataks make Naan breads for Morrisons and Sainsburys... I've got one from Sainsburys in my freezer from the affected batch. :(

Another example, Diet Coca Cola is £1.32 for 2 litres, the writer says that Asda Diet Cola at 44p is as good-personally I always buy the own brand Cola anyway, why pay for the name?.

Not really sure what he has based that on. I have drunk gallons of Diet Coke in my life and the Asda stuff tastes absolutely nothing like it tbh.

Sure some stuff like cornflakes, rice crispies etc will really taste no different no matter who makes it, but with cola it is a very different matter.

Just have to mention that Tescos Diet Coke with Almond is really cheap and ace mind you.
  • “loobylou2” – re detergents (posting #970):

I recently bought a new washing machine (Bosch) and was telling a friend about this (she’s 80 years old!) about this. She asked was detergent I use – and she told me she only ever uses Tesco’s own brand – the “Non Bio” flavour! – a box of 48 tablets (2 per full load) costs under £3. I like the convenience of tablets over loose powder. It also claims to be “suitable for sensitive skin”. Should add that I'm a "one person family"!

For stain removal I use on of the Own Brand “Oxygen” products – currently “Go Oxygen” from Asda. I’ve recently had nasty staining on the neck of my white T-Shirts (a sebaceous cyst erupted!) – soaking the garments in a strong solution of “Go Oxygen” has worked wonders and "restored" them.

I will not, on principle, use the heavily advertised product that can vanish – probably because it’s sold in a deep pink container.

I am an own brand non bio user with a sensitive skin family and have been using Asda non bio for a few years now and found it great. I have tried Morrisons own non bio which made me itch and Fairy now makes my eldest itch so have stuck to the Asda non bio which I think is on offer at the minute for the bigger box at aroun £3.30 (nearly half the price of persil)
  • Thanks for all the replies re washing powder, I really appreciate it. Think next time I need to buy some I'll give the Asda own brand a try as I do my shopping online with them!!!:j
