  • best value washing up liquid.....after doing tests against our current washing up liquid we make it was concluded that the two best value washing up liquids are.........

Sainsbury's own brand and Booths washing up liquid.

Remember we have conducted tests on a number of brands and actually washed dishes with quite a few own branded washing up liquids (i.e. tesco, morrison) and these two came out top.

We didnt compare persil, fairy liquid etc as we were looking for own brand value washing up liquid and persil etc are more expensive.
Which magazine recently compared all the main brands and own-brands and said that Fairy was their best-buy, as long as you only use the correct (small) amount. People who put in the usual amount are wasting money.

Own-brands are worth getting as they are cheaper, though you do need more. Their top recommendations are Tesco Citrus and Asda Original with Antibacterial Agents.

I worked for a company that supplies units to many retailers, including Magnet and MFI. I visited the four main makers of these units, which for some reason were all based on the plains of Northern Italy near Venice. They also supply units to Ikea among others.

There were quality differences in the units they supplied to different retailers - the quality of the foil (or veneer) and the density of the interior particle board. That's not to say that Magnet and Homebase are not the same, but Magnet did usually aim for higher quality materials than others.

Also, don't forget that the units you order are probably not in stock when you buy them, but are made in large batches. Some retailers will stock more in the UK to be able to fulfil orders more readily. Others may have poorer stock control and keep you waiting weeks for a single piece - you'll have seen the stories in the papers ;)

That reminds me, Magnet doors are completely foil wrapped, whereas HB's only have the front of the door covered. They were using exactly the same materials for both and all the same machines.

yes.....we didnt bother testing fairy etc as they will perform better against the shops own brands but its also more expensive.

in our tests we washed dishes covered in syrup, sponge etc using a specified amount of the different supermarket own brands washing up liquid. we found sainsburys to be the best as it contained more actives therefore lasted longer and cleaned more dishes.

im only saying this because we have "actually" done these tests at work. i cannot substantiate the which report as ive not actually done the tests.

Does anyone know who makes Tesco own brand car cleaning products?

I use their alloy wheel cleaner which is only a pound or two and is much less that the market leader (£6-7). Their products carry a flashline that states compare to market leading product. Just wondering really...
Hoping this year is better than the last. :)

On meats, cheeses, cold meats, milk, butter, margerne and yoghurts etc. there is a little stamp like looking mark. It is oval or at times triangular and has numbers and letters on it. if you compare that no-name with the branded and it is identical it means that both come from the same factory, where the likelyhood of it being totally identical is logical.

It's true that some symbols/codes on products identify their production absolutely (and an earlier post here explained this very comprehensively) but I just wanted to clarify that not all random symbols can be necessarily taken as a guarantee that one product is the same as another.

My Grandfather used to run a large printing business, which made packaging for all sorts of products; Mars bars, PG Tips... the list goes on and on.

Anyway, the little mark you describe could just as easily refer to who made the packaging... My grandad's factory's symbol was a triangle as you describe. Unless you know what you're looking at, don't assume it refers to the product.

As a little girl I would always look out for his symbol on things I knew he made wrappers for. Sometimes I wouldn't buy a product if I couldn't find one on the shelf with a wrapper he'd made! :A

(but more often I'd check when I was already halfway through munching the Marathon or whatever, no sense in biting off your nose to spite your face ;) )

i met someone who works for mothers pride. he said that they make bread for loads of shops (he had M&S, coop and other breads with him from the staff shop). he did say though that most places have exactly the same stuff but M&S are more fussy and have their own recipe.
