Great 'disguised Own Brand' Hunt.

Many years ago, as a student, I worked in Batchelors pea canning factory in Sheffield. There were about half a dozen categories of tinned pea ("garden" (see below), processed, marrowfat, etc.) but about 100 different labels. The labels ranged from cheap-looking supermarket "own brand" ones to very expensive looking ones for up-market shops. The tins of peas kept rolling down the line uninterrupted, and the labels were just changed and attached as required.
Incidentally, I also seem to remember that the "garden" peas were all bleached white, put in the cans with an irridescent green dye, and then cooked in the sealed cans afterwards. This was to make all the peas look the same colour, since consumers apparently did not like the variations which would otherwise have occurred.

Why do they have to tamper with food - fresh as we all know (as long as it is washed well etc) is best but if you have to have tinned then using bleach and dye can't be good for anyone :mad:0 -
Talking of tampering,
A friend who i work with sometimes has a week off of work to go and temp and earn some extra money  braver than me may i add, taking a week off work ... to go to work :wall: can't think of anything worse !!
Anyway he went to work in one of these factories with the fruit and veg, it's all sorted in one place for all of the major supermarkets.
For people that buy packets of fruit / veg or if you buy the little plastic bowels of chopped fruit ie melon and things for your lunch DONT !!!
Apparently everything they don't sell before the sell by date gets sent back to the factory, the bags opened, the not so good looking stuff thrown away and the ok looking stuff re-bagged and sent back the next day
This is for all of the stuff, including thigs like tomatoes, peppers, fruit etc etc etc.
Nice eh ???:pale:0 -

That's gross
And what happens when the stuff starts to look a bit iffy after it's been rebagged? Does it get sent back again and again until it's all useless?
Mr S buys this stuff ... I'l let him know. Thanks0 -
Yes apprently it does, i know i used to buy bagged salads and things before he told me.
i don't know how long they do it for but he says that he's pulled out some really ropey looking thing like tomatoes that have started to go mouldy
so god knows how fresh some of the stuff is !!0 -
