  • hi guys
sorry if you already know this but I am new and don't know how to use this but here goes;-
recently had makeover for friends wedding as chief bridesmaid in a very well knwon department store. I had a Chanel makeover and basically picked the colours anyway myself! On chatting with the sales girl, Chanel makeup is actually made by the same people who make Maybelline - THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE. I have tried it. Check out the teint foundation, it is the same as Chanel foundation!!!!!

Sorry for the ignorance but is one of these cheaper than the other?
  • i know for fact that Del Monte pineapple juice is exactly the same as the cheaper Just Juice pineapple juice, the only diffrence is the packaging, i used to work for Del montes and was a blender for the juice factory.

However you can only get Del Monte Orange juice from Del Monte, they use the same oranges as all the other brands (just juice, sainsburys, tesco's) but put there own little twist in the mix, personally i think it makes it taste burnt but there we go.

will try and find out more on the juice line now that summer is coming, i still have my contacts but my memory of the job has faded, the pineapple is a dead cert though.

I thought it was pure orange juice - so what are they adding?

I remember from my Earth Mother days that orange juice isn't just orange juice. They're allowed to add small quantities of other ingredients including sugar. I can't remember the details but there were three books I read at the time that exposed all these tricks and loopholes. One was by Tim someone who was allied to the London Food Commission, another was called something like Not onthe Label and another was by the Guardian writer Joanna Blythym. I may have got this totally mixed up!
  • hiya, Unfortunatly i am not allowed to divulge the actual ingredient they put in the drink, we have to sign up to like a secrecy thing, but it's not suger i tell you that much, and it is only in a very small quantity, 50ml per 4000 litres

When I had the shop we were supplied by Nisa Todays with chilled food, on more than one occassion a chicken portion was labelled for Sainsbury or Safeway or Tesco instead of the Heritage brand.
With most own label products the groups will have the product made to a certain spec, this is why in taste tests there are differences.
A cousin used to work for cross & blackwell before it was taken over, they used to just change labels on the cans for the different stores including the Naffi.

To check whether generic medicines are the same as name brands, look at the PL (product licence) number on the packaging. If the number is the same, the product is the same.
  • As well as cars being similar under the skin (Bentley Continental or VW Phaeton anyone?), there is a whole can of worms with replacement parts for cars. Once a car is out of warranty (and no MoneySavers buy new cars, do they?), you can save huge amounts by buying "pattern" instead of manufacturer's own.

You do have to be careful, as the parts may have been shoddily made to make them cheap, but then again many pattern parts are made by the people who made the originals.

As an extreme example, I needed 8 new sparkplugs for an old Ferrari (No, I'm not just name-dropping. It was cheap with 100,000 miles on the clock and I sold it for more than I paid for it. Just don't ask about running costs...)
Anyway, the spark plugs were over £30 each  (Cheaper in packs of 4, but even so). I checked the originals, and they were regular Champion plugs, but with a Prancing Horse lovingly stamped onto each one. Bought the most expensive Champions at a tenth the cost.

Sorry charlieheard, don't believe all you read in the motoring press. As a Bentley design engineer I can assure you the two cars have very little similarity under the skin. The Continental GT has a unique Engine (built completely in Crewe) sharing only the lower block with the VW W12, a unique chassis, glazing, floorpan, drivetrain, suspension system, switchgear, full duplex wiring loom, body, and the interior is 100% Bentley, and I might add that the spark plugs are unique. Commonality with VW is limited to parts like the electrical connectors, steering-wheel frame, nuts and bolts, video screen, electric motors etc.. and in this respect, suppliers of these parts will also be selling them to BMW, Mercedes, Fiat-Ferrari and many others too.

On this subject, here's something to consider... Rover just got panned this week, and somewhere there are fields and fields of Rover 75s someone is going to be selling cheap..!!
The 75s chassis was designed by BMW when they were looking at front wheel drive, and it's a corker. The steering, gearbox, suspension, electrics and pretty much all the mechanics are BMW 5 Series, much of the soundproofing technology came from the 7 series. Go for the 2.5 V6 engine, it's super-reliable, quad-cam, and has great torque. Probably the best value (non skoda) £12000 you'll ever spend!!
