A frind of mine used to work for a drinks magazine, and reckoned that most supermarket & off licence chain own brand malts were made by the big-name distilleries. A few years ago, Sainsburys own-brand Speyside Malt was in fact Glenlivet, but an 10 year old expression, as opposed the standard 12 years. The distillery used for own-brand supplies will change according to what excess production is available, so Sainsburys own-brand is almost certainly something else, now.

Sure - but when it's described as "Island" malt - there aren't too many to choose from - especially as they have a separate "Islay" malt.....

Unlike Speyside with it's 30-odd distilleries (depending on how tight you define Speyside of course)
There are 10 types of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that don't

In many cases it helps if you say where you are - someone with local knowledge might be able to give local specifics rather than general advice

Indeed, if you rule out Islay then the chances of it being anything other than Talisker get much smaller. It may not be the exact same stuff you get in a branded Talisker bottle, though.

I don't know if it's still the case but a couple of years ago, Cains Brewery in Liverpool were producing supermarket own brand beer for the Co-Op and Asda.

Hi, im new to this but here goes...... I worked for Lancome for 6 years and I know that they are owned by the L'oreal group who also own the following :- L'oreal, Lancome, Mabeline, Helena Rubenstien, and a huge range of fragrance houses. I also know that Clinique is owned by the Estee lauder group who also own Mac, Clinique, Estee Lauder and once again a load of the fragrance houses. Chanel also owns Boujois. Clarins is just Clarins. If I think of any others I will let you know. Oh I worked for boots for 8 years too and when I worked for them there batteries were made by duracell not sure if thats still the case now though!

Your right with your info. I used to work for a parcel company that delivered for all of the major cosmetic companies & had very good knowledge of their products... I used to collect the freight from all of them in the SE for overnight delivery. I've still got loads which were all freebies!!

Hi All! Excuse me if I don't quite do this right as it is my first post ever on any website!

But... :rotfl: A close friend of mine works for an Independant clothing manufacturers who make coats, jackets, and most outawear (Skirts, trousers - you name it!) for a lot of the high street fashion names, both men's and women's. Most of it is made out of Eastern Europe or the Far East and imported into the UK.

    But did you know...

Designers at Debenhams (which you see advertised a lot) are not really designed by the designer at all??? Manufacturers such as my friend's company show their range to the buyers at Debenhams who pick the style for each of the Designers at Debenhams who they are responsible for and place X amount of orders as required to suit the range???! The designer very rearly even sees the garments that they are putting their name to!

What you are paying that extra money for is the label in the neck and the swing tags, plus the oppotunity to spend your money within the Designers at Debenhams range / shop - Thats it!!! :j The quality of the fabrics are often the same or very similar (although prints, where used, would be exclusive) and the same factories are used. And, NO, Debenhams don't pay more money to the manufacturer because they are using the designer name to sell them...

These same styles can also be sold to the high street fashion shops whos markup is much smaller, sometimes small details are changed, but quite often its the same. So, next time you pay the extra for a John Roche, Jasper Conran or any of those Designers at Debenhams - Ask yourself... "Am I really getting what I think I'm buying?!"

    :T
  • I use to work in Burton's Biscuits in Edinburgh. It was a real eye opener to brand labels. You used to get moved around to different production belts depending where help was needed.
One time I remember I was working on the rich tea line where biscuits were being wrapped in M&S packaging. When the order had been completed, the packaging was changed to the Happy Shopper brand which would more than likely cost half the price of M&S.
In fairness, if quality was not to standard, M&S would refuse the order. So there is no need to be snobbish about your biscuit any more

Easy to tell this, but John Lewis washing machines, dishwashers etc are AEG with a different badge and a lower price tag, plus better guaruntee.

In my time at Waitrose we would frequently receive cases of chilled juice branded for other shops, usually Marks & Spencer, Somerfield and Safeway. Also we'd sometimes get bottles of milk with Waitrose AND Tesco labels on them (ie. on the same bottle!).

Stuff like Matsui can be made by anyone and everyone, usually anonymous Asian or eastern European companies. A lot of cheap no-name TVs and DVD players are made by Turkish company Vestel, for example.
