Hi all, I was given a widescreen TV by cheapo brand JMB found in Argos among others. I opened it up to find the tube labelled as Panasonic and the circuitry by Philips. Go forth and open your "cheap" brand (after disconnecting the elec) and report it here.0

I noticed when reading the list that was released recently for the wrong dye that got into foods, cant remember the name of it, sorry but it was the one that could cause cancer if eaten, that nearly all the own brand ready means were actually made by the same supplier which made me think that you may as well buy the cheapest. Having said that i don't buy ready meals i use the MONEY SAVING OLD STYLE BOARD and refer to a recepie folder that i have made from it

Off subject - CCCS gave a big thumbs up to this web site when i told them that was where i found their info from :T0 -

When i had my washing machine repaired i was told that Candy are a version of Hoover. They used to be classed as a cheaper product that wouldnt last as long but now they are actually made to last longer than Hoover and are still cheaper. I bought Candy as i was skint at the time and it was all i could raise thinking if i get 12 months out of it i will smile, lol 6 years on its still going strong0 -

I bout a Candy fridge/freezer in 1989 for the same reason, it was the cheapest I could afford at the time. It stayed with me until I changed my kitchen 3 years ago, now its at my workplace and still going strong but for the door hinges and the seal is a bit iffy. It cost me about £112. If that's not a bargain, i dont know what is! :T :j :T0 -

I paid out a total of £249.99 which was the Candy washer at £199.99 and i got a small tumble drier which cost the left over £50 which lasted 2 years, wasnt very happy about thatand was a 'named' brand, sorry i can't for the life of me remember what it was but these days i always look at the cheapest price first even though sales assistants always try to sell you the dearest. I assume they are on commission to make up their wages :cool:
edit - I think i actually paid about £220 in total, but hey its 6 years ago lol :eek:0 -

Just shows you what different experiences we can have! _ I wouldn't touch a Candy if it was 50p. We bought a flat that came with integrated appliances all Candy, presumably because they were the cheapest!.. Less than 2 years later the washer/dryer went on fire in the middle of the night.. good job my hubby is an early riser!.. Anyway, when I got into work next day the topic of conversation was a Watchdog program from the night before about Candy washing machines going on fire... :eek:
... so I ring Candy and get them to send out an engineer.. nearly 10 days later a guy rolls up .. takes the top off the machine and says ..
'actually this isn't the same model as the one reported on Watchdog so tough'..
To be quite honest, after that, I wouldn't have accepted a replacement for anything. I went out , bought a Hoover - which I know wasn't related to Candy at that time..
it's still going strong 14 years later!
( btw - before the flat I had an Indesit for years, gave it to me Mum when I moved and it was still going strong when she replaced it - only because it was a bist rusty on the front and she had a nice new kitchen... )HLK

Oddbins do an "Island Malt" and it's definitely Talisker... and substantially cheaper too - which is nice (if you like Talisker of course
)

In many cases it helps if you say where you are - someone with local knowledge might be able to give local specifics rather than general advice0 -

A frind of mine used to work for a drinks magazine, and reckoned that most supermarket & off licence chain own brand malts were made by the big-name distilleries. A few years ago, Sainsburys own-brand Speyside Malt was in fact Glenlivet, but an 10 year old expression, as opposed the standard 12 years. The distillery used for own-brand supplies will change according to what excess production is available, so Sainsburys own-brand is almost certainly something else, now.0
