Never said they were Margaret. However, it does have to be said that most pensioners are living on incomes which are slightly (if not greatly) below the national average. Was just helping DD not to get upset by woodbine's comments.
Perhaps there ought to be an age limit (over 60?) on this thread??????
(and before anyone gets in a tizz, I was joking). It's a pity you can't hear tone of voice in the written word.
I wasnt trying to upset anyone, merely quoting facts, facts that are freely avaliable:money:0 -
Facts and figures are quoted freely without entering the real world. We read what someone whats us to think. I have been in the marketing research field for over 40 years and its all about what they want us to believe. one writes about something but then another writes about the same thing but with a different view, giving us confusing opinions. But if we only get to read one view we take that one on board. ITS THE REAL WORLD THAT COUNTS>
ps Woodbine if I send you the money can you get me some petrol please, its £1.16p a litre here!!!! and rising daily not by 1p but by 2/3p every two days and I have 6 petrol stations all within 3 miles of my home.Look after the pennys and the pounds will look after themselves:money:0 -

Where can I find the national average, and whether it is per family or per individual? And where is it stated how many pensioners are living below it, just on it, or above it?
Sorry, chesky. Having done a degree course which included statistics I tend to ask these type of questions. Nothing personal, it's the way my mind works and I can't help it.
I don't disagree at all that many pensioners are poor. I'm just not sure that all of us are. There's a big difference between 'many' and 'all'.
PS: Found the answer to my own question. http://www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/nugget.asp?id=334
This is one measurement but it still does not answer the second question: how many pensioners are living below the national average.
DH and I, as a household, have income in the 3rd quintile of that diagram, 3rd of 5. 'All households' come in at £30K a year. How many of those are 'retired households' is not specified.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

The plain fact is that since pensions stopped being pegged to earnings there is a very broad agreement that pensioners have become poorer than they were before that happened..................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

That's fine Margaret, go for it. But I still never said all pensioners were poor, what I said was (and I quote) ..... people around who really believe that all pensioners are living in the lap of luxury.......
So get your statistics and I look forward to seeing them but don't misquote me.0 -
Anyway, this may help to start you off from the Office Of National Statistics :
Median gross weekly earnings for full-time employees were highest for 40 to 49-year-olds at £551. Male employees reached their highest earnings in this age group at £606, whereas women reached their highest earnings for 30 to 39-year-olds at £498. Earnings increased until employees reached these age groups and steadily decreased thereafter.
So now you know what the average salary was last year, all you have to do is find out what the average pensioner income is.0 -
Would it help to know what the 'average' pensioner income is?
There will be some at the low end, some at the high end, and some in the middle.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

Sorry, my mistake, thought that was what you wanted :
...Where can I find the national average, and whether it is per family or per individual? And where is it stated how many pensioners are living below it, just on it, or above it?...0 -

No, I don't think it would. Trying to compare income and earnings is like comparing apples and oranges. Or am I wrong ?.....................I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
