  • I love marmalade but have never attempted to make my own. I should really as I bet it's much cheaper and tastier than any of the bought stuff.

I'd love to make it - but I am the only one who eats it in this house so would be a waste really.

Just posted on the 'Value Brand Products' thread about the frozen mixed veg almost trebling in one hit!
WHY is it so difficult for "experts" *snorts in derision* to see that it would be far better for the nation's health & waistline to make good food more affordable, rather than hiking up the price of the other stuff :wall: We eat a LOT of fruit & veg here but people assume it's fast food & ready-made when they look at us, because I can afford to buy basic range white rice & pasta but would really prefer the wholemeal.
The world is definitely loading up the hand basket for it's one-way trip 'down under' :(

  • I noticed the value frozen chopped mixed veg going up in price too, does anyone know why it's gone up so much, and if it will ever go back to being the price it was before? I thought it was just sainsburys, but asda and tesco have put theirs up in price too. :(
    :o I'm a money wasting expert. :o
  • i've noticed so many things these last couple of weeks that have gone up by at least 20p at my local tesco's..if it was by 5p to 10p i wouldn't mind so much, my OH is sick of me gasping with shock in Tesco's just now...but now i've noticed these price hikes i just cant help it!!
i first noticed all the sugar went up by at least 20p a couple of weeks ago, and the other day tesco's fruit juice 1Ltr used to be 80p or 3 for £2.00, thats gone up to £1.00 each, other things i've noticed is toilet roll, yoghurt, eggs and jam....i'm starting to get a little obsessed!!!
rant over.......but i was wondering if this is all for the sake of the stocking up big christmas shops?
    totally a tog!:D

Price increases will happen no matter what, it is when the increase is excessive that when it is a pain, for instance I buy a certain brand of oatcakes from Sainsbury, last week they were 74p this week they are 90p, 16p increase in my opinion is unnecessary :mad::mad:

I tried to find the LIDL offer (£5 off £30 shop) in the Daily Mirror yesterday. I wodnered whether anyone could tell mewhich page it is on please as I couldn't fund it...?

O the subject of price increases recently, we ordered heatin oil a few weeks ago and with the cold weather here in Scotland went throguh more than we expected so we have ordered more for over the Xmas break... it's now 20p more expensive per litre and that is the same all around the companies we called.

    Cheers

  • Does anyone else think Iceland prices don't go up much?

I started using Iceland this time last year, and I remember thinking "I'll have to be careful in here, there's lots of things for £1 which are only 70p in Morrisons".

But I kept going in because other things were £1.20 in Morrisons and only £1 in Iceland.

One particular example is, last year Morrisons own brand frozen garden peas 907g were 89p, while Iceland's own brand were £1 for 1kg.

Yesterday I went to Morrisons to buy a pack and they were up to £1.40. So I left them and went to Iceland to check their price, they were still £1 in Iceland.

It was the same with a pack of fish fingers, £1.39 in Morrisons and still only £1 in Iceland.

Their own band tea bags haven't gone up in a year either. I've noticed a lot of other things too!

I agree with this fresh fruit and veg (and frozen as well) plus basic "igredient" items as I call them such as sugar/flour/rice/pasta etc the building blocks of good basic homemade meals should be subsidised. This could be done at zero cost to the tax payer, by adding the extra as a higher rate vat on what you could call "empty calorie" foods. Ie anything with trans fats, anything that "pings" or has high levels of salt.

Just out of interest have are any on here on benefits with kids under 5. OH was recently made redundant and I was suprised to find out about the food vouchers you can apply for. But the local clinic reckon alot of people don't seem to be aware of them and miss out.

Another thought I had about this is that the shops are probably being very cynical, especially the big 2 (mr t and mr a). They put prices up now knowing that alot of customers will still buy in the run up to christmas anyway. They then miraculously in January can have a big "sale" and slash all those prices.

This is one of the reasons I prefer Aldi to the big stores, the prices tend to stay the same for very long periods. Not much of this up for months then slashed for a couple of weeks.
Best bet this time of year is keep watching the forums/comparison sites and grab the best pre christmas deals. I will then do a basics shop in Aldi, plus use my local farm shops.
