  • I did a late shop the other night and there was some organic lamb mince on special so I loaded up my basket and made a vat of mince sauce. I've bagged some up for spag bol then I made 4 shepherd's pies in servings big enough for me and the kids. The rest went in the freezer and I felt very smug as I think each portion price would be in pence.
  • So pleased about the emergency meals now in the freezer - defrosted one tonight before trick and treating, very handy!

Tesco's is getting very expensive now, i have stopped shopping there altogether since a lidl opened much closer.

This last weekend i used the local butchers (as i have done for over a year now) The meat cost me £11.40, same meat at Tesco's (according to the online thing) would have cost £17.50.. thats over 50% more, and probably not as good.

Also went to Lidl and spent £15.03, Tesco would have been just over £20 for the same or similar stuff if i remember correctly.

Occasionally go to Sainsbury's and some stuff not bad, but there is defiantly no single place that is good value all round now.

I dearly wish that I lived closer to Lidl and Aldi, not only because of their prices and ranges, but because it is a much less frantic shopping experience. You do have to get your skates on when you get to the till but apart from that the branches I go to are quite relaxing.

I noticed that there is quite a lot of brand names gradually creeping into Lidl which is a shame as I feel yet again, we will be left with no choice but to pay what the large corporations want us to and those prices will be the same over all the supermarkets.

Lidl doing bread flour for 50p a bag - now that is a bargain!

I would love to know how people get their meat so cheap from butchers...Earlier this year i had to get one pork chop from the butchers as i was short and it cost me £3 odd. Yes it was lovely and better quality but when budgets are tight the £10 deal in tesco is the only way we could afford to buy meat as it gives us at least 8 meals from that....

It's the same with Asda though Asda's meat quality isn't as good as tesco. I think of all the supermarkets Morrisons has the best meat but there isnt' as many deals....
  • I always use the butcher for meat too and I think it's cheaper than supermarkets for better choice and quality. You get cuts that you don't see in supermarkets and they'll prepare it for you and give advice about cheaper cuts or making the meat go further.
  • Got a great piece of lamb shoulder yesterday from the butcher and cooked it on a long low heat for a couple of hours with a load of root veg. Great casserole for a filthy winter evening!

for me the butcher always works out cheaper per weight, as well as better quality.. some butchers can be expensive though, i do not use the local one but instead stop at one on my way back from work. Much better friendly service also.

I always feel embarrased in the butchers when they say that will be £6 for sausages!!!! I would love to have a butcher I could trust and build a relationship with.
