Thanks all for the tips on home delivery and prices. Thats another good reason not to have it (as well as the delivery charge). The comparison tip will be useful as well, and I have just signed up for Aldis email.
Luckily I have a bus pass and it will get me easily to all the supermarkets except Sainsburys so there is no excuse for me not to shop around.
I try to buy stuff when its on offer especially when it comes to the managements cat food as they are fussy and they take up a large part of the budget but they are well worth it.
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)
  • I have noticed a lot of prices have jumped up in huge steps lately in Tescos. There are still bargains to be had, but I think they are becoming fewer and farther between. I do shop at various places, but prices definately change a LOT these days. On with the challenge...
Healthy eating aim per day: 3 fruits, 3 or more vegetables, 3 low-fat dairy portions, 3 starch portions, 2-3 lean protein portions.
Weekly aim: to include 2 portions of fish (one oily), some nuts, seeds, beans and pulses.

Of course prices are rising - Chirstmas is coming and they need headroom now to introduce silly discounts over the holiday period.

Expect an Asda "Rollback" event any time soon too.

I was in Teso this morning and the bread flour was £1.29 so I bought Hovis at 99p also the plain flour was £1.15 so I bought McDougalls at £1.00.

thanks maryb have used mysupermarket but didn't know you could compare them in a list like that, will definitely have a look.

Does anyone know how the prices match up at morrisons as they are not on mysupermarket? I have checked aldi and seen what is cheaper for me, but morrisons is a bit of a mystery.

I noticed yesterday that they pretty much price match Tesco, Sainsburys etc for milk - they are doing 2 x 4pt for £2 at the moment same as the rest. The bags of mixed colour peppers that Sainsburys sell for £1.25 are only £1 in Morrisons, and they had packs of 4 x Branston beans for 89p, which is cheaper than Lidl's current offer. I also noticed that the Morrisons 3 for £10 meat offer looked to be quite good if you shopped selectively. Ie packs of mince that would be four two person meals, packs of stewing beef that would do 3 x casseroles, that sort of thing.

Incidentally, for anyone wanting a pork joint for sunday lunch, check Asda - their pork shoulder joints (not the Smartprice ones) are excellent value, cheaper per kg than the Smartprice ones and are also boned out so they can easily be divided up for freezing if required. :D

  • I'll definitely be using mysupermarket from now on. My mum always used to say 'look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves'. Looks like she was right!!
  • I don't use main supermarkets unless there is something I need i just can't get from Aldi's, Netto's or Farmfoods. Farmfoods are brilliant for bread (2 loaves for £1) and milk (2x2l for £1.50). I prefer making my own bread but the kids don't like it so much for some reason (tastes wonderful to me and I use a very good breadmaker, think its just fussiness). I could not manage without the cereals in Aldi's.., addicted to Harvest Moon brand with red fruit (masses of fruit, more than any other more branded cereal I have bought and not too sweet). Its great when I am hungry and no time to make anything but I love it to get my blood sugar back up (am diabetic).

I did pop into Sainsbury's on Tuesday because I could not get any baking powder anywhere (horrible price too).., my older son wanted Barbecue flavoured Pringles from there. I refused to pay £2.59 each for them though. Next day I was in Netto's and saw them at £2 for 2 lol.., £3 saving.

Going to all these shops is a fair bit of walking, they are all in different directions but it keeps me fit. I refuse to take buses (too expensive and why wait 20 mins if u can walk it?), and have a large shopping trolley I bought for £20 off ebay.

However, I now also go to the Bullring market in Brum. It only costs £2.50 for all of us with my family rail card and I save a fortune there! Veg is cheaper than at any other market i have seen. Buy a huge savoy or green cabbage for 60p.., enough for several meals. I also buy meat from the indoor market, tending to use one stall because they are cheaper and meat seems very good quality.

I use a pressure cooker as much as possible (quicker and cheaper than cooking on the hob/in oven), and as everyone else says, bulk out meat dishes with lentils, soaked beans etc (they are a good thickener too). Pressure cooker is brilliant for soups. I make biscuits and cakes when I can or we don't have them in the food cupboards much.

shhh...... I bought 25 bags in sainsburys!!!!!! along with 12 plain and 8 SF!!!!! I have no idea where I am going to put them all!!

If you transfer some to freezer bags then you can freeze it, flour doesn't freeze into a solid block.

I called Asda customer care and asked for an explanation - I was told it was a supplier issue, despite it being an instore bakery item.

Where do you think they get the rolls? They don't materialise from nowhere, whether they are made from scratch instore, or come in frozen (very common with rolls), they are supplied by a supplier.

  • Thanks Missymoo, so much going on in life at mo that's it's easy to just opt for the quick unhealthy food but after failing miserably on all previous diets I'm really going to push myself this time. My weight gets out of hand so easily but I think I can combine diet with money saving so extra incentive to make it work!
