Thanks to Missymoo for the heads up on this one:

She has reported on another thread that Tesco have today hiked the price of their own brand white bread flour from 50p to £1.29! MySupermarket.co.uk bears this out, as does Tescos own site.

At the time of writing, it appears that Sainsburys are still selling their equivalent at 60p a bag, whilst Asda are even better value at 50p - I have just popped out and stocked up, but there wasn't that much of it left on the shelves at our local Asda, and I noticed that other types of their own brand flour appeared to be completely out of stock.

HTH someone, and if you see a post by Missymoo elsewhere, please click her thanks! :D

And Val I love soup, got a load of the veg deals from aldi yesterday and will make soup for my lunch, OH likes soup, but only for his lunch, it is not a satisfactory dinner apparantly. Oh dear I'm making OH out to be an ogre and he's really not he's gorgeously lovely in every way, but is just a bit of a fussy eater with a huuuuuge appetite.

This is specifically the bread flour though - yes, the plain & SR has also increased (42p - 59p I believe) but the bread flour has more than DOUBLED!

Have you put your shop into mysupermarket.co.uk? I did that with a typical shop and was horrified that Tesco was over £10 dearer than Asda for the same items - in fact I think it was nearer £15. Sainsburys also worked out cheaper (although not as cheap as Asda). Guess where we shop now?! Plus make sure that you check the receipt on the way out of the shop to make sure that all the items on spesh have gone through correctly (I brought some cocktail sausages on spesh and the scanner picked up the reduced price and the original price, so I could have paid for them twice).

Also, meal plans will help you cook around what's already in the cupboard and only buying what you actually need to put meals together (sorry, I'm making assumptions here but you didn't mention if you already did this or not) - I find this helps hugely, plus it makes sure that you keep on top of your stocks and use by dates.

Make full use of veg to bulk meat out (grated carrots in mince, plenty of veg in casseroles, lentils and pulses are good filling bulk out foods as well, etc.) and try and cook everything from scratch if you can, plus take a look at the thread Building blocks for the Freezer here which I think is great.

Also do you have a local market? I find our local market to be excellent value for money on fruit and veg, and I can get a big bagful of fruit and veg for the week for about a fiver - if it's going slightly overripe, then cook/freeze it and have it later. :D

    Hope this helps x

  • Ive noticed in Tesco particulary that the Value range (whats left of it) has gone up. The foam bath was 18p and is now 35p, shower gel was 10p is now 30p, the value orange in the chiller is 56p but the carton is 62p for the same amount. I bet there are lots of other rises I havnt noticed. Getting the shopping is becoming a battle of wits! I did get lots of reduced bread in Tesco today though and meat so not all bad. Oh and they have 42 wash boxes of Daz for £4
I have every possession I want. I have a lot of friends who have a lot more possessions. But in some cases I feel the possessions possess them, rather than the other way round

hey gefjun, good tips thank you, I do go on mysupermarket, that was where I first noticed the price hikes, I love comparing the prices, I really enjoy seeing how much money I can save.....hmmm does that make me sad lol.

Ooooh I didn't think about the market, there is one here, but it is in the city so is quite expensive, but I am going to see my mum on saturday and we are going into town and there is a lovely market there, will see what I can find, thanks for that.

hey stars and moon, I know what you mean with the prices, I don't think it will be 'value' for much longer. And you just know all of the other supermarkets are going to follow suit. I will take a look at the prices on mysupermarket tomorrow and see if there are any changes.... it is so ridiculous, christmas is likely to be cancelled this year me thinks lol.
