No change in price of large packs in asian and chinese shops.
The small tubs are provided for home-bakers - they are not intended for household cleaning.
The small tubs will always vary in price - you are paying for shelf space and variety and wasteage and varying purchases and rare purchases. You are not paying for the cost of the ingredients. More and more people do not bake anymore. It must be a nightmare for both parties - both shopkeeper and provider.0 -
Have just got the shock of my life going into Tesco:eek:, I wrote a list on mysupermarket last night and it was just under £100 and this morning when I came down it had shot up to £110, now some of this is to do with deals but some is just massive price hikes, for example:
Bread flour 50p now £1.29
Value Plain flour 42p now 59p
Value SF Flour 42p now 59p
Vlaue hair spray 38p now 50p
Value UHT milk 45p now 49p
Value sliced cheese from 35p to £1.29
These are the only things I noticed, I mentioned it to the lady on the till and she said she had really noticed it today, not just a few pence either....
Now I know that the flour has gone up because of the Russian problem with wheat, but I don't understand the other things, especially as the VAT increase isn't until after christmas and is only on essentials, So why the hike, I have no idea..... but I am not going to sink I am going to swim.....
So I was hoping by starting this thread that we could come up with some old style ways to get over this obstacle, as it is only going to get worse come january.
For instance I am going to use sunflower oil in cooking instead of olive oil, bake OH cakes instead of buying chocolate biscuits, I've bought some Pearl barley as it is much cheaper than lentils and I am going to try and bulk out shep pie, lasagne etc with it, haven't done this before so I will let you know how it turns out.
Also I am going to try and slice potatoes for on the top of shep pie and fish pie as it would use less potatoes than mash.
So basically my challenge is to stick to the same budget as always even with the price hikes but come up with some savvy ways of making my budget and culinary skills go further!:T
So anyone up for the challenge too?

Could you do your order at Sainsbury's instead? Their flour is still the same price as last week (ie no stupid rises) and I find their own label bread flour better than Tesco's.
42p for Basics SR
42p for Basics plain flour
60p for OL bread flour
32p for basics hairspray
It's only a game

I did go to Tesco instead actually, so good thinking. The prices of all flour is going to go up, I just think Tesco happens to be the first. I am petrified that the other supermarkets are going to follow the hike too, I can't imagine Tesco being the only one.
Will keep an eye on it and keep you posted.0 -
Thanks for the heads up. I notice that Tesco's wholemeal bread flour hasn't gone up yet. It's actually cheaper than the white now at £1.05. Asda's white bread flour is still at 50p according to MySupermarket. Time to stock up methinks.0

Those price hikes are dreadful - My DDs are eating almost constantly atm and its costing me a fortune already0 -
I must admit to stocking up on flour.
A few other prices to watch are coffee, anything made by the cacoa bean (cocoa, hot chocolate and chocolate - these are also vat-able) Meat, eggs, milk, butter etc will be affected by the increased cost of grain to feed the animals.
Plus the inevitable increase of the robbing middle men's cut and of course the vat hike:mad::mad::mad:
Pretty scary reallyBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

oh I didn't even think about the effect it would have on other things such as milk, butter etc!!
I know, I have taken a huuuuge paycut which will kick in at the end of the year, and I have £100 to feed two of us for a month, I know some would say that is a lot, but OH eats for britain, and if his dinner hasn't got meat in it then it's not dinner. He'll only have shreddies (or cheaper version) for breakfast, wont drink UHT milk, and doesn't like gravy so anything doable in the slow cooker is a no go!!!!! So difficult but I will do it!
Decisions I made on my shopping today to try and bring the overall cost down, Frozen sausages not fresh, value long grain rice not basmati, value mixed herbs instead of buying all seperate, bought uncut bread as was on offer 2 for £1.50 and asked the nice guy to slice it for me at the bakery instead of buying 2 for £2.00, also bought frozen white fish instead of fresh for fish pie, little things that all add up. I even bought treacle to try in flapjacks just to see what it tastes like as it is less than half the price of syrup.
atleast it will be good for my diet, no chocolate for me!!0 -
I've started to plan my budget for moving home (finally), and things like this are an awesome challenge. Keep up the good advice folks
