Discussion thread on Supermarket prices - are they becoming too high?

I usually keep quite a generous supply of bicarbonate of soda in my store cupboard but had let it run down to my last pot.
Shopping in both Sainbury's and Tesco's today I found the price quite extortionate at 83p and went home without any.
I notice they have changed the packaging to Oetker but surely there must be some other explanation. At these prices it will be cheaper to buy proprietory cleaners .
E.T.A.I have just done a price comparison and Asda are showing a price of 47p so will buy it there when I'm next visiting .
If anyone knows of anywhere cheaper please post.
Sorry to grumble
Regards

Depends on how much you want?
You can get 25kg bags for about £30 delivered!British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
sparkleworld, I do so agree with you about the rip off prices charged here in the UK for bicarb, I discovered in Spain that you can get a half KILO!!! bag for just 40 cents, needless to say I bring a couple of bags back with me when I visit.
Another thing to cost a fortune here, (that is if you can find it) is ammonia.... fantastic for cleaning, there again in Spain you can get it for about 20 cents!!!! here its more like £5 a bottle. It really annoys me how we are taken for fools over the price of certain things. When man sacrifices the Love of POWER for the Power of Love, there will be peace on earth.0 -

They charge us more because we will pay it, simple as that.[/QUOTE
A mans got to have his bicarb:I suppose you can get it straight from the works in Gateshead or somewhere like that.I get mine off Barnsley Market, and my ammonia from the pet shop where it is exempt from VAT.
Its a bit harsh for others who have to travel to Iberia for a clean oven;where is the place where you can buy 25Kg -sounds a bit fishy.Thats a lots of ovens if you ask me

Hi there
Do you have a chinese supermarket near you? I have bought large bags, 2 or 3 kilos not sure and sofa bound at the mo and it was really cheap. Probably have it in indian/asian shops too.Sealed pot challenge member no 1057

I have seen this mentioned before. Just why do the Chinese use bicarb in such amounts? Just curious.Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

postage is £1 (I think its free if you spend £4)The best portion of your life will be the small, nameless moments you spend smiling with someone who matters to you.0 -

sadly we dont have any Chinese or Indian supermarkets where we live, ( it's not very cosmopolitan round yer!) but I will definitely look out for one the next time I venture further afield.0
