She shouldn't encourage her daughter to smoke, by purchasing cheap cigarettes she is condoning her daughters actions.
Perhaps by having to pay high prices for her cigarettes her daughter may smoke less. Mothers who smoke around young children are completely selfish, why don't they give their kids some WKD or heroine or leave them in the care of someone a bit dubious!
if her daughter want's to smoke its her choice if her mother wants to buy her cheap ciggies its her choice she doesnt have to condone her actions buy doing it

i dont drink but i buy my girlfreind alcohol (because its my money) it doesnt mean im going against what i believe or im encouraging her to drink

As a non smoker this is a very easy NO.

    1) It's illegal AFAIK
    2) I view her habit as child abuse. At least do it outside!!
    3) I simply don't believe in buying people cancer.
    4) The high taxes are (officially) supposed to put people off. I wouldn't want to undermine that effort.
    5) The "it's a money saving site so it must be moral!" argument is rubbish. By that argument it's ok to steal too because it saves money.
it's not illegal to buy cigarettes from abroad as long as you go through the right channels and declare it at customs

    No it's not.

I know - let's make it illegal to smoke if you're a parent. That'll make everyone happy won't it? And we'll have PSCO's visiting *all* parents (even the old non-smokers - especially those! they could be lying) to make sure they aren't smoking.</hyperbole>
    3) I simply don't believe in buying people cancer.
Are you up to date with your Daily Mail list of (other) things that cause cancer[tm]? Do you no longer buy alcohol? Chocolate? Coffee? Lightbulbs? Have you stopped using the internet? Deodorants? Thought not.
    4) The high taxes are (officially) supposed to put people off. I wouldn't want to undermine that effort.
We have high taxes in other areas. Like National Insurance that's going up soon. Is that supposed to put people off working?
    5) The "it's a money saving site so it must be moral!" argument is rubbish.
As are, to be honest, are your arguments.

Her mother is AGAINST her smoking and therefore shouldn't encourage her by buying them for her. By smoking her daughter is inflicting the smoke on her son who has no choice. YOU have a choice whether or not you are with your girl friend when she drinks, if she was an alcoholic would you still buy her alcohol? Do you really love her?

I think you have to accept that you are a mother not a keeper:D

I think she should get the ciggies for her daughter and that it is NOT her business to do anything but ensure her dissaproval of her daughter smoking in front of the children is known. Anything else is interferring too far in the life of another adult.

The net income to the UK Government from smoking and tobacco products is vast! Take into consideration the corporation taxes, the taxes paid by those employed within the industry and the "health" taxation and VAT on top and then consider the hit upon the economy (to say nothing of the large number then unemployed) of loosing this industry and the cost would be pretty much as bad as that caused by the bank collapses;)

The income overall from tobacco products is FAR larger than the cost to the NHS btw;) I think Governments would be hard put to replace that income.

I accept that smoking is not a desirable habit, nor does it smell nice, and if one is irresponsible then it can cause harm to others! There are, however, equally undesirable habits that cause even more anti-social behaviour and risks and I think the UK public have totally lost any sense of balance over smoking.
"there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"
    (Herman Melville)
  • As a loving mother she cares about her daughter and her grandchild, why would she knowingly inflict a cancer, that can be prevented, on them by buying cigarettes for her daughter.
Yes it is up to the daughter whether or not she smokes and her mother has no say in the matter, only to air her concerns over health issues. She shouldn't buy them for her daughter.
Can I say also that people are always banging on about the amount of revenue the government makes out of smoking and we couldn't possibly ban it. But a hundred years ago they were saying the same thing about slavery, because so much money was being made from slaves, banning it would destroy the economy of the country, however we are all still very wealthy compared to most of the world!

No. If Hilary's against smoking she should set an example. The money angle shouldn't enter into it even if it would cost her daughter more to buy them here.

  • No.
I have been in this position with my ex and flatly refused to do it, as I feel strongly about smoking. It caused a very bad row; but he never asked me again!

Just no. As someone else pointed out you wouldn't buy alcohol for an alcoholic. This is another addiction which also impacts those around you. If the mother doesn't approve she shouldn't buy them.
