'Should Hilary buy Chelsea's fags for her?' Money Moral Dilemma

  • Why help this lady to kill herself and even worse her grandchild? No one has the right to inflict poisonous smoke on others particularly young children - she should be ashamed of herself. No way should anyone buy cigarettes for other people (unless they truly hate them maybe!)
  • Smoking will never save you money.

Smoking is a luxury and a choice, not a need. If you can't afford it, stop. If you can't stop, get help. I did - so can anyone, if you want to.

Most people in this country don't smoke, and really, really, hate smoking. That's why most people jumped for joy when smoking was banned in pubs.

If you can afford it, and you love it, smoke away, with other people who also enjoy it. Don't make anyone else suffer because of your choice of indulgent luxury.

those that are saying youre encouraging them to smoke and get cancer are looking to far into it
its a MONEY SAVING website not a HEALTH SAVING website

Yes but it's a money MORAL dilema :p

As others have said, if Hil' doesn't agree with the ethics of smoking around children, it would be the height of hypocrisy to enable her daughter to do so, by giving her a bulk supply of cigarettes!

No, because by purchasing her cigarettes she is effectively condoning and legitimising her smoking around her grandson.
  • No, I would NOT buy the fags for Chelsea. I do like the occasional ciggie myself (usually @ two per day), but I know my mother (as well as my dog Jasper) disapproves of such habits and so I would neither ask nor expect her to buy fags for me.

The MMD doesn't state whether or not Chelsea is giving her mother the money for the fags. If she IS, then the above statement would do for me - don't ask your mum to do something that would make her unhappy. If NOT, then it is Hillary's money - why should she spend her own cash on fags she disapproves of? She'd be better-off spending that dough on a duty-free and harmless gift for her grandson.

I wonder how much of Chelsea's child and/or housing benefit is being spent on fags...?

Being a smoker doesn't make you a bad person - but trying to get your mum to do you a favour that you know would make her uneasy probably makes you just a little bit questionable...
  • If the daughter was receptive then I might buy them as a means of ensuring she doesn't smoke around her child or in the home. Problem being when the fags run out so too does the incentive.

With that in mind, I would most likely refuse to buy any fags for her. What I would do is look for a children's book about the dangers of passive smoking. Figuring it would do better to educate the child rather than the mother. As this might have more impact upon her.

I would still buy gifts for both though, just no fags.

theres a very big line between buying someone cigarettes and assisted death

She shouldn't encourage her daughter to smoke, by purchasing cheap cigarettes she is condoning her daughters actions.
Perhaps by having to pay high prices for her cigarettes her daughter may smoke less. Mothers who smoke around young children are completely selfish, why don't they give their kids some WKD or heroine or leave them in the care of someone a bit dubious!

As a non smoker this is a very easy NO.

    1) It's illegal AFAIK
    2) I view her habit as child abuse. At least do it outside!!
    3) I simply don't believe in buying people cancer.
    4) The high taxes are (officially) supposed to put people off. I wouldn't want to undermine that effort.
    5) The "it's a money saving site so it must be moral!" argument is rubbish. By that argument it's ok to steal too because it saves money.
