Norton runs out tomorrow, can u recommend a cheaper good alternative?

As title suggests - is there any downloads that are just as good, I have heard about AVG. What is this and does it protect the computer from viruses and hackers etc etc, I am not very good with computers so the less jargon the better.

Just search these forums for AVG, Avira, Avast and Microsoft Security Essentials - you will quickly see that there is a range of opinions

There's a lot of choice and the guys above have already recommended the popular ones for you. Certainly you don't want to be paying for protection as the free ones work just as well as the paid ones and do the same job. Don't fall for the urban myth that paid ones are better because they cost money because it's rubbish.

I'm a fan of AVG personally as that's all I've ever used, but others swear by Avira, Avast and MS Security Essentials so it's whichever you like the look of and takes your fancy; they all do the same job.

AVG is very good. It comes in a free, cut down, downloadable version, or a pay version with more bells and whistles.

Go for AVG free.

I have used AVG, however I have now switched to Microsoft Essentials, it seems to be far better.

It is free to use.

I use Eset Smart Security and have done for years without issues. Couldn't believe how much quicker my machine was without Norton!

Use any of the systems mentioned, just make sure you erase every single trace of Norton!

To remove Norton look here the choice of a/v is for you to make from the other posters recommendations since I (for various reasons) still have NIS. I know MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) not :money: and Avast are fair products having played for a while with each. Ensure you have other strings to your bow by using various Spyware/Malware tools too I use S&D (without teatimer) Malwarebytes and SpywareBlaster.
