Norton 360 v4 has zero discernable impact on system performance for me.0

Did you even read the site you linked to?
Their most recent summary report, December 2009, puts Symantec (Norton) as the best overall product and gives it the Gold award. How are you concluding that it performs poorly?
All this Norton bashing stems from their products of a few years ago, which were bloated and caused a lot of system problems. Their new products, especially Norton 360 v4.0, are sleek performers and top pretty much all of the online comparisons you may care to look for.
Yes, you have to pay for it, and yes there are decent free alternatives. However, to say that Norton performs poorly is rubbish and in actual fact if you read the reviews you will see that none of the free ones are now even coming close to the level of protection offered by the good paid ones from Norton, Kaspersky, Trend Micro etc.
Totally agree, nothing wrong with the new versions of Norton, and it's even more amusing people linking to a site that gave it the award for best AV product 2009:rotfl:0 -

"So is paid-for security a waste of money? “It depends on your appetite for risk,” says Con Mallon of Symantec, the outfit behind Norton security software. “Social engineering techniques mostly fly under the radar of many free security tools, including Microsoft’s.”"
Now why would you think that:idea:0 -

well it does for me, i dont know maybe its just in my head but it really does seem sluggish, even on a brand new pc... but hey, if your happy, great!
but tbf, i only really trust what i have experienced, reviews can be bought, which is why i always look for a handful before making a decision about most things im buying, just to get a full spectrum view.0 -

There's not really many technological defences to social engineering though, all I can think of is blocking suspected phishing sites, which is a feature built into most current-generation browsers. What exactly Symantec bring to the table I don't know, but I'm happy to stand corrected on the issue if someone informs me otherwise.0 -

In my personal experience, the easiest way to catch anything otbher than doing dodgy downloading is through the web browser when visiting an 'infected' webpage
FIREFOX with the NOSCRIPT plugin will do a FAR better job than anything Norton will:idea:0
