Microsoft Security Essentials currently tops my list and is free,

2nd preference is split between Avira and Avast

Kaspaesky is also good/equal to the above but paid for -if you bank with Barclays however you can get it free.

AVG I currently recommend to avoid given the number of people posting on here (do a search) having problems with it and/or AVG not detecting viruses they've got (used to be good, just isn't any more)

Norton and Mcafee I regard as junk

Use any of the systems mentioned, just make sure you erase every single trace of Norton!
    No kidding.

The last time I used Norton, system speed slowed to a crawl. It took three days to get that garbage out the system ('uninstall' still leaves debris all over the place).

    Never again.

  • It's worth noting that Microsoft Security Essentials was awarded an Advanced+ rating by AV-Comparatives, with only Avira and Avast achieving the same level. AVG did not score particularly well in the majority of the tests, therefore it is not a good recommendation to make.
  • Microsoft Security Essentials or Microsoft Security Essentials or Microsoft Security Essentials ! :)

Symantec and Norton are different ends of the same company, their corporate product Symantec is good but their bloated greedy hog product called Norton has been rubbish for 5 or more years.

In short pay loads for [ Norton ] rubbish or get a good [ MSE ] checker for free, seems like common sense to me.

We use Norman Anti Virus in our small office which is pretty good and not too expensive, not sure if they have a home version.
I use to have Norton and Symantec and will not go back to either one as they slow your PC down drastically and are overpriced.

How did you " save so much money " when this thread is full of free alternatives which I am sure are as good as Norton, if not better. ??

Quite, that poster seems to have paid a premium for a bloated product that slows down his PC and leaves it alot more open to virus's and other malware than a good free AV would have done, does not make good MSE sense at all!!!!
