Hi folks I am in west yorkshire too and after a promising start to easter its now freezing. I have done a general tidy up ,added a few primulas and weeded and have only just got some seeds to plant for my small raised beds(but forgot to buy compost!!) So will be doing that tomorrow.
I completely re-designed my back garden last year and dug out a windy gravel path, extended my flower beds down one side where there had just been a narrow strip and built 4 raised beds. All didnt go to plan and I didnt do very well with my veg. I think I was a bit overwhelmed trying to sort everything at once. I also added a small wildlife pond!!
This year its all looking a lot better and so despite the late start (although perhaps not a bad thing temps considered) I am planning to have another go!
I have some dwarf french beans, 3 varietys of toms, beetroot and lettuce so far and also some marigold and nasturtium seeds to plant, to keep the pests off my veg!
Has anyone grown cucumber outside with success?
I will be doing my seeds in my kitchen which is very warm and sunny so hopefully once planted my seedlings will get growing quickly!

Have you lot seen what Incredible Edible Todmorden are up to?

In other news, I've been brave and planted out all my seedlings, courgette seeds, beetroot, salad - I hold out no hope at all about them growing!

I can't beleive I've missed this thread, I'm a West Yorkshire gardening tyke, and love it, been talking myseld into getting chickens, 1 cos they eat slugs and scraps, 2 there droppings help speed the compost process up, 3 for the eggs.

Going out walking Ingleborough again tomorrow, loved it the first time.

    Hiya bertie,
All the usual stuff strawbs and toms in hanging baskets, beetroot, onions, spring onions, lettuce leafs those cut and come again, peas, beans, spuds, all sorts of fruit, sweetcorn, garlic, herbs, got trays on every windowsill, I guess I'm luckier than you got a long narrow garden, but not renting so it's up to me what's out there.

    Forgot courgettes, pumpkin, cucumber, sweetcorn.

We dont rent -but being a modernish house ,for some reason that condition was put in when planning was granted (15 years ago) ...plus I get the feeling if I got some anyway and ignored it then my neighbours might complain. Its very annoying!
Wow you are growing a lot . Do you grow the cucumber/sweetcorn outside? fancy growing some (if I can fit it in lol)

At the moment I'm starting seeds inside, this is my third year and i've built it up, got 3 compost bins now and 4 water butts, the only problem is I never think it's enough, the cucumber is an outdoor variety can't remember the name but the cucumbers grow about 6inches long, which i think i plenty, what are you growing? and it's a shame about the clause in the planning, which part of Yorkshire are you from?

Howdy, can I join please? North Yorkshire here. :j

I'm a container gardener, currently got toms in pots in the kitchen window, 20 of them! Best are close to two foot high :) Chili peppers, (not so big), and herbs galore.

Salad in the plastic greenhouse, beetroot, spring onion, Peas against a wall and strawberry's as always :rotfl:

Regarding the covenant regarding chickens, most new houses have this. They are put in by the builders to prevent people keeping livestock etc which may put off other buyers whilst they are still developing. The only people who can enforce these covenants are the builders who will not care a jot once they've sold all their houses and moved on. The local council will do nothing to enforce these covenents, believe me we've tried! If you ring them they will tell you the covenents are noting to do with these.
So from that point of view theres really nothing to worry about as no-one will seek to enforce this covenent, people may moan but there is nothing anyone can do. That said I'm not suggesting upsetting the neighbours necessarily but don't be put off because of the covenants. Why not have a word with them, they may not be bothered at all, you could always offer them some eggs now and again, maybe a win win situation?

We are about 3-4 miles from you lol...lived in dewsbury until 4 years ago!. anyway I am going to grow 3 types of toms, dwarf french beans, lettuce and beetroot so far. Going to try and find some kale seeds too. I might get some cucumber seeds and see how they go but am limited on space ,I have 4 raised beds 90cm by 120cm and a few tubs for veg growing.

Thanks alm721 I have considered it ...although my dh thinks I am barmy:) I would actually love an omlet eglu or cube but the price:eek:
