Gardening in Yorkshire - what are you doing at the moment?

Every morning for the past few weeks I've woken up thinking I'd better start on the garden - but it's either raining, snowing, or frozen solid! I don't have a greenhouse and because we have the heating off our house is freezing during the day so I can't grow anything on window sills yet. I was wondering what others in the area are doing at the moment in prep for the growing season?

  • Hi I'm in Yorkshire too and, like you, keep promising myself a start on the garden which never happens! I have potatoes chitting on a spare bedroom windowledge and that's it! I do my potting, transplanting, etc. in the garage but it's too darned cold out there just yet to even think of filling pots etc with compost!

  • in a nutshell - not much!

Potatoes chitting and sweetpeas sown but that is it. It's going to be a long while before anything can go out so I won't sow it too soon as I will run out of windowsills

Hi another Yorkshire pudding here, i live in North Yorkshire.
I'm a neewbie to gardening so been spending most of my free time swotting up on how to grow things, what you need & where to get them, been looking on line & reading theres so much to learn, i'm even blooming dreaming about it i'm doing it that much!!!.
In the day time through half term been to the DIY'S/stores buying the bits & bobs i need.I've decided i need to slow down & study one veg at a time so i don't confuse myself too much.
Everything i'm doing is going to be in pots/containers (only have a patio & gravelled front garden) & many seeds will be started on my window sill.
Going to make a start on my chillis & peppers before it's too late, then i'll be on with reading up & planting my tomatoe seeds!.

Can't do anything else as garden covered in snow!!! Very annoying.

I am West Yorkshire, I have this very evening put cabbage, cauliflower, brussels sprout and calabrese seeds in modules in an unheated greenhouse. Also had some 20 Albion strawberry runners delivered from Ebay yesterday and planted them in pots this evening. So the gardening year is starting off very well. I intend later this week to start some other seeds off in modules inside on the window sill, but not many

I'm in Scotland so even further north! What am I doing?

Well, outside I'm doing any non-planty work like repairing the edges of the raised beds, cleaning out the greenhouse, tidying the shed, clearing rubbish, sorting out nets etc and making a note of what I need for the season...new canes and nets, labels etc, plus bagged compost.

Inside I'm chitting spuds, sorting out the seed box (dump old seeds, buy new if necessary) and sorting out my planting plan for the allotment.

Actual plant work? There was one period a couple of weeks back when the ground was soft enough to work so I planted the shallots, some late garlic and some overwintering broad beans. And did some weeding.

I find even if you can't get at the plants and soil it's still well worth spending any spare gardening time on the general tidying and prep work, because come late March you won't have any spare time at all to do it.

  • valk_scot I am a newbie to all things greenfingered... so I missed the autumn Garlic deadlines. Would it be worth me trying some garlic in a container now? And if so when should I expect to harvest?

    Thanks

What kind of garlic have you got? Some varieties do better from a very early spring planting than an autumn one. If you were going to use garlic from the supermarket well...this can have variable results.

But then again, you never get anything if you don't try. It's still okay to plant some garlics at this type of year so give whatever you have a go. Plant good sized cloves 4-6" apart. You'll need to keep it well watered through any hot spells, since you're growing in a container, but otherwise it's not to fussy. Harvest when the stalks go papery brown, usually in late summer.
