Is anyone growing sweetcorn up in Yorks?

I`ve started some off on my windowsill and the seedlings are about an inch to an inch and a half tall, i was wondering if it would be ok to plant these out now and cover with one of the little polytunnels thingys from the pound shop.

    Any advice appreciated :D

I am in west yorkshire. I tried sweetcorn a few years ago but didn't have much success. You need to plant a block of them so that they can cross pollinate.

So far all I have done in my garden is dig out some ropey sprouts and de cat poo my raised bed.

In the school gardens, I have weeded the raised beds and covered some of them with weedproof membrane. I was planning on planting some woody herbs and lavender in one of the beds this week, but I have just heard on Look North that there may be snow next week

We had a polycarbonate greenhouse delivered to school this week courtesy of the let's grow campaign, so between myself, the caretaker and another TA, we need to suss how to build it!!!

OOH! thanks for your reply prettypennies,
i`ve just checked the weather forecast and yes we may well get some more snow so i think that i shall hang fire. If i do get a bit overwhelmed then i can stick them in the unheated greenhouse.

I`m in South Yorks and i grew sweetcorn for the first time last year, i did read that it was best planted in a block for pollination purposes but i don`t have the space for that so i made do with a straight line.

It was gorgeous and so different tasting from anything that i`ve eaten before. I`m going to plant about ten plants all being well and if i`ve room later i shall put a few more in.

DH & i built a raised bed a few days ago, it almost killed me :rotfl:i did the sawing and the drilling and DH was chief teamaker, hard work but well worth it. I`m itching to get it planted up :D

another Calder Valley girl here! Got some salad, beetroot, cabbage, pumpkin, and peppers on the windowsill, but given that we've got snow next week I'm stuck for what else to do! any ideas?
  • Hi
I'm up on the hill above Holmfirth. I've put my spuds in their pots last week but they are tucked up under fleece (if it doesn't blow away!) and snuggled up against the house wall. They got covered in snow this time last year and survived so hopefully if it does come back they will be ok. I'm holding fire on almost everything else because I said a few weeks back I was sure we would have another chilly snap. The tomatoes on teh bedroom windowsill are doing well though.

salad and beetroot seeds have come up on our windowsill, and I found some potatoes that have decided to chit themselves so am giving them a helping hand on the windowsill too. Apart from that, nothing to report!

    West yorks here.

Spuds and garlic went in yesterday, and a big spring clean was started yesterday to clear fallen leaves, dead plants etc.

Hi everyone, I'm in West Yorks. Fairly new at gardening, second year this year
We've got first earlies, shallots, onions & garlic outside, plus I have chilli seeds, tomatoes, pumpkins and climbing beans germinating inside. All look to be doing well so far - fingers crossed!

Serious excitement on the Optimist plot. I noticed my first early potatoes are showing their tiny green noses. :D

    Hi gang South Yorks here.
I'm giving Sweetcorn a go this year for the first time, and my seedlings are about 3in tall at the mo Sunnyday. I'm keeping them in the greenhouse for now.

It's my third attempt at butternut squash - I'm going to grow some outside and some in the greenhouse this time as I had problems with Mrs Nutkin and slugs previously.

Lettuce doing well as are the Minibell toms (last year I had great success with Tumbling Tom) Oh and Peppers. Last year I didn't sow then early enough.
Onions yet to go out, but they're almost ready.

In the school garden, we've sown beans and lettuce, along with some nasturtiums and calendula so far.
Lots to go in after the holidays though!
