A good foundation is worth every penny, go and ask at the make up counters, I have pale skin and find Clinique do some pale ones.

Once you know what colour you want what's to stop you looking on e-bay, or using pricerunner/Quidco etc. to get the cost down a bit more?:)

Hi all, I wish I'd had all this advice last year when I was looking for a really pale foundation. Over a couple of months I visited most of the big cosmetic counters (after giving up on likes of Loreal, Rimmel, etc) and would get a consultant to do me up in their lightest foundation. I would always tell them from the beginning that I wanted to see how it would wear throughout the day and what it looked like in different lights – i.e. I wouldn’t be buying there and then. They were always happy with that and wouldn’t push for a sale though it was amazing how often they would try to convince me that a foundation was right when the shade was clearly too dark.

Initially I went for the YSL Perfect Touch (the one with the brush) as it was the best available in my town. Boots (and Harrods) have additional shades (lighter and darker) than most stores though you may have to ask for them as they weren’t out on display in my Boots. In the end I decided it was a little too dark and had to take my search to a bigger city with more make up counters.

I wouldn’t mourn the loss of Prescriptives, which recommended their palest pink foundation that another consultant later told me was completely wrong, apparently very few people have pink-based tones.

Ultimately it was Bobbi Brown that had the right shade for me – their lightest, Alabaster. I got the Skin foundation but you can get the shade in variety of different foundations e.g. oil free, so there’s bound to be one to suit your skin type.

Nixer, I know it’s a lot of money to spend on a foundation but it has lasted ages. I wish I’d gone straight there and not wasted all those fivers on not-quite-right cheap foundations – it soon adds up! If you do want to stick with cheaper ones, there’s a Loreal one that’s pretty light, in the Infallible range I think.

    Good luck!

Hiya, does the skin foundation leave your face in certain lights a bit shiny? I have just bought the long lasting natural finish. I am worried in some lights though that it makes my face shiny. Do you have the powder for it too? I was going to buy the powder but wanted to be sure that this foundation is okay. Its the perfect shade for me, just not entirely sure yet on its finish.

Feeling really gutted now as I think this foundation is making my face too shiny. I know it sounds dramatic but I am so fed up with trying these ones, buying and them being rubbish. Do I settle for a orange face?

I can't use minerals as it clogs around my spots

    Clinique is all too dark.

Mac studio fit was too cloggy on my face

bobbi brown the best shade ever but i have a shiny nose and chin which i dont have.

    maxfactor too dark

    :(

My face looks a tiny but shiny like this girls face because of the bobbi brown foundation, on my chin and nose, should I just accept it though, is it a bad look?? Just fed up with wasting so much money on it all.

I have similar colouring and use MAC Face & Body in C1 for light coverage and the new Revlon Photoready in Vanilla if I want more cover. Both of these have a yellowish undertone. I know the MAC is quite expensive but it lasts ages.

    Hi

Am subscribing to this thread as I am also a fair-skinned freckly redhead (sounds SO attractive written down doesn't it :)).

I don't wear foundation, only moisturiser and mascara, although when I go out I would like to look a bit more 'made up'. I like the look of the Bobbi Brown one but would need to try it before I spent £28! Which stores stock it?

I bought mine from House of Fraser, colour wise its perfect. I am just trying to convince myself on the new sheen I have with it. I have like a sheen on my nose, chin and cheeks near my nose in some lights. Is this what they describe a 'satin' finish?

A review on the foundation I have got, its mentioned in there the same problem as I have with it. Guess i'll have to try using powder, but that always comes off after a couple of hours, to shine again.

You need to get whats called a "translucent powder" which is basicly a powder to reduce the shininess. Its colourless- or has a slight tint and is far easier to get in paler colours.

Many brands stock them, but for the correct tone I'd say go back to BB and ask, it may workout more expensive but atleast you'd have the correct shade- its far harder finding the correct shade of translucent powder as you really need to test it out over your foundation and see it in day time light. Apply with a large brush sparingly, buff over shiny areas- your not trying to create a powder coating over your foundation, your trying to 'blot' the shiny areas and prevent them from returning.

I know that Mac, Clinique, Boobi Brown, Dior and the BodyShop sell translucent powders. I would have thought lines like Benefit, Bonjours, Maybelline and No.7 would have them too but never looked. (I tend to only apply foundation on my nose and under my eyes as long as its not too bad to need a concealer so tend not to wear all over foundation-that and I never go out anywhere to need foundation :( )

I'm pale (but not really pale).

I bought the lightest Revlon new colourstay mouse make-up.

FAR FAR to light for me - waste of money.

But if you're looking for super pale thats worth looking at.

Best foundation for me is No.7 intelligent colour.
