You might look into some of the Japanese brands, they make foundations in very pale tones.

Yea, being thick here is it because Japanese people are quite pale too?

As Bobbi Brown make up is made in Japan and is very pale! The palest I have ever seen and I have tried all of them!

Oooh yes! Bobbi browns Alabasta (sp!) is great- I'd love to be able to afford that! In the mean time theres Maybelline, the Satin finish and the new 24 hour liquid foundations are great.

Its a shame prescriptives aren't around anymore- I never got 'into' their products but my mum did- she said they made a foundation to match your skin tone and meant you would always get a correct shade!

Boots have just bought out a new pale foundation called "cool shell", still a bit too yellow for me but may suit someone out there.

Yea I agree it is pricey at £28, but its so worth it. I worked out if it lasts me 6 months, it works out to cost me £4 a month, £1 a week roughly. But it should last me a year, fingers crossed. And I am just so happy to finally find one thats a good shade! As its so difficult normally. I just stumbled upon them really.

They colour matched me, I thought I would be Alabaster but I was Porcelain. Cost me £45 with the blemish stick but fingers crossed it passes all my other needs, staying on all day, etc etc

I looked at the BB foundations but was put off buy the bit that said they were all yellow based. I have a cool colouring with very pinky undertones.
I have quite a lot of red acne scarring which make my jawline look darker than the rest of my face and neck and I think that's why they always colour match me too dark as they test it on the scarred area.
I really need one that isn't going to make my skin any worse too. I have samples of Estee Lauder Doublewear but it's too dark in the shade she gave me and I think a tiny bit too light in the shade I said I wanted to try, I'm wondering if it would be cheeky to go and ask for another sample inbetween?
I would buy it if the shade was right but I can't afford to spend that much if it's not perfect.

Hello, I need to recommend http://www.everydayminerals.com/ ! I know it's US based but the postage is very cheap! This stuff is the best mineral make up there is- plus it's inexpensive and not tested on animals. They have sample kits for free (you just pay postage which is normally a few quid) so you can get the right shade for you. Before I tried this I never thought I could wear powder as I have very dry skin but as long as I moisturise well before I put it on its great! The coverage is amazing. The trial size pots you can get for free last ages too! Great stuff! :D

    Hello all!

I'm VERY pale, was once a red-head but now its turned mousy :(. After trying loads of foundations I've settled on Elemental Beauty's mineral foundation in English Rose. I got a sample (85p) of a few colours and fell in love!
Its great for new foundation users as you can go as light or heavy as you like and it still lets skin breathe (my skin is so much better now after ditching my liquid foundation).

I'm also a pale redhead, but my skin flushed very easily
The Lush colour supplements are great - I use the light yellow to counteract the redness
Illamsaqua (have a look on their site) do loads of colours, I use it too, and they go through to actual white foundation. So you could buy the white and mix it with any that you already have that are too dark

I am very pale, red haired and love my make up! :) Again, I have blue tones to my skin so anything yellow is a no no. After years and years of trying EVERYTHING I could get my hands on I was lucky to come across L'Oreal's True Match Foundation- it was on offer and I thought I might as well have a go. It is brilliant! You do have to wear a moisturiser if youve got dry skin as it will show up but it makes my skin so even- like porcelain! :)
Boots have it http://www.boots.com/en/LOreal-Paris-True-Match-Foundation_16049/ I use the nude ivory which matches my skin perfectly and just to make me completely flawless: http://www.boots.com/en/LOreal-Paris-True-Match-Touche-Magique-Concealer_984446/ which is just as good as touche eclat by YSL- except it doesnt last as long.
The foundation is liquid and stays liquid as I know sometimes you get it on your face for it to dry immediatley before you rub it in, resulting in patches, but this stuff is great- cant recommend it enough! :)

Thanks all, I had forgotten about this thread until it bobbed to the top of my subs. I haven't got very far with trying things out as my skin has improved a bit, not so dry and red perhaps because we are now out of winter or possibly because I have taken up using night cream (Lidl, £2 a pot). Still it looks as if Vikki has done sterling work in trying out absolutely everything - thanks for reporting back.

I did buy a very cheap M&S one that someone upthread recommended and the shade was quite good but the coverage was a bit thin. I might mix a lot of it with a bit of the too-dark Max Factor stuff and see what I end up with (a brown mess that's too dark probably).

I will probably look at the Maybelline ones next as they're not too expensive and they look as if they do some nice light shades. That Bobbi Brown stuff does look a good shade but I think I've got to work may way through all the cheap stuff first!

Hi all, I wish I'd had all this advice last year when I was looking for a really pale foundation. Over a couple of months I visited most of the big cosmetic counters (after giving up on likes of Loreal, Rimmel, etc) and would get a consultant to do me up in their lightest foundation. I would always tell them from the beginning that I wanted to see how it would wear throughout the day and what it looked like in different lights – i.e. I wouldn’t be buying there and then. They were always happy with that and wouldn’t push for a sale though it was amazing how often they would try to convince me that a foundation was right when the shade was clearly too dark.

Initially I went for the YSL Perfect Touch (the one with the brush) as it was the best available in my town. Boots (and Harrods) have additional shades (lighter and darker) than most stores though you may have to ask for them as they weren’t out on display in my Boots. In the end I decided it was a little too dark and had to take my search to a bigger city with more make up counters.

I wouldn’t mourn the loss of Prescriptives, which recommended their palest pink foundation that another consultant later told me was completely wrong, apparently very few people have pink-based tones.

Ultimately it was Bobbi Brown that had the right shade for me – their lightest, Alabaster. I got the Skin foundation but you can get the shade in variety of different foundations e.g. oil free, so there’s bound to be one to suit your skin type.

Nixer, I know it’s a lot of money to spend on a foundation but it has lasted ages. I wish I’d gone straight there and not wasted all those fivers on not-quite-right cheap foundations – it soon adds up! If you do want to stick with cheaper ones, there’s a Loreal one that’s pretty light, in the Infallible range I think.

    Good luck!
