    Evening

I am a total newbie and after some advice. I have just sat and read all the 47 pages of this thread and my head is now swimming lol

Basically last year we have some gardeners come and do a veg plot in our garden (through teh Hugh Fearnley Whitinstall project) anyway they haven't been back for ages so we have decided to have a go ourselves.

Today I bought some carrot seeds and some Maris Piper seed potatoes. We have 3 beds dug out at the bottom of our garden so thinking of something relatively easy to do tgghat we will actually use. Either onions, leeks or brocolli !

Our soil is clay so not sure which is best. I am hoping to pop and have a look round wilkinsons tomorrow too

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

Dear Megansmum, so sorry to hear your news. I guess you have a lot to think of and organise, but gardening is a great way to take your mind off sad things. Hugs from Liverpool (((((Megansmum)))))

'scuse me for butting in but I have been reading your progress with interest and thought an upcoming programme might be helpful, have scanned through the last few days posts and don't see it mentioned, apologies if someone else has already :o

New gardening programme starting BBC 2 Wednesday at 8 pm with Alys Fowler from Gardener's World called The Edible Garden showing how to grow veg amongst your flowers in your back garden.

Megansmum feel for you, been there myself many years ago and as someone else mentioned, you may find that gardening is good therapy, I certainly did. Take care.
  • I've been avidly following this thread for a few days and would love to join in.I just wish I'd started reading before I started planting! I've got a balcony so it's container gardening for me.

    Progress so far:
Tomato seedlings growing well, been potted up. Have put them outside for a few hours everyday, probably won't today I don't want them to drown!

Alpine Strawberry kit from B&Q looks like only one seed has germinated and it's tiny. Planted the seeds nearly 5 weeks ago! Very disappointed. Currently sitting on the kitchen window ledge with poly bag in situ. If anyone one has any ideas I would greatly appreciate it.

Similar tale with regards to Elephant Garlic. Been planted in pot outside. I've read it needs a frost to make it grow, fingers crossed this week's snow has helped.

Basil growing well on window sill but a bit sparse

Same can't be said for the Coriander I think it's going to take over shortly.

Spring Onions like fine blades of grass but seem to be growing well.

Planted less than a week ago and yet to make an appearance, Lettuce,Courgette, Squash and Pumpkin. Potatoes chitting nicely ready to plant at weekend.

Megansmum, thinking about you this morning and hoping you are okay.

This morning I have potted sugar snap peas, mini sweetcorn and planted leek seeds...most of which are in the plastic upright greenhouse thing. I've also sown some mixed salad leaves which are on the windowsill indoors and i'm wanting to grow mushrooms in a propogator (as directed on the suttons spawn packet)...so i have just started that off as well.

I am so hoping for this gardening endeavour to work.

p.s. and basil is growing up there too!

Skaps, I'd probably start your corriander inside still at this time of year - mine are on the go in the greenhouse.

Spent this morning building a chicken wire tenty thing for my peas to climb up, as well as a a small tent like covering for my other veg beds. Potted on the rest of my chillies and not much else to do today!
