Forget the greenhouse for carrots, and forget transplanting them too.
Get yourself a council recycling bin. Fill with B & Q multi-purpose compost. Sow carrot seeds in it. Water. Wait. Water a lot.
Wait. Water some more. Wait. Pull up weeny carrots. Sigh. Eat them. Smile. Water again. Wait.
Hey presto, carrots!
You'll probably still get some this year.If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -

Are there holes in the bottom of your recycling bins or are you finding they work anyway without holes? I have been looking for somewhere to plant some carrots and that might be just the thing!0 -

How did you manage to get the recycling boxes - if we lose or damage ours we get the third degree from the council.0 -

Yes, there was a hole in each corner, but I drilled a few extra too (about another 4, IIRC). I forgot to say that there's an inch or so of sharp sand in the bottom to aid drainage. If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -

(Parts of) Birmingham and Walsall Councils both (fairly) recently changed from the tubs to wheelie bins - we got to keep the tubs. A kind chap at work located some (think they were collected from people who didn't want them), so I got some more from him. I've pushed my luck a bit and asked him for another dozen - he's leaving soon so who knows when the opportunity will present itself again? If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -
oh my god its been raining all night my poor plants !!!!!
Not seen thunder and lightening like this for a long time
It looks like a river at the front of our house hope it stops soon0 -
Can anyone tell me if this is ok. I have a tub with carrots in, but 1 of the plants has grown a long stem with what looks like flower heads on it........do i leave it or should i pull it up and throw away?
Love seeing everyones pics......i haven't got any fruits on my peppers yet, just a few flower buds. Cucumbers are coming on a treat, can't wait to try them.0 -
Hey everyone.
Been gone off here for so so long - sorry about that. I will go back and read all the posts in mo (and do a proper update soon) but I wanted to ask a quick question. How do you know when your spuds are ready? Mine have taken over the whole garden adn it looks like a jungle! A couple flowers a few weeks ago but only like 2 flowers and nothing since.0 -

If its flowering the carrot wont get any bigger so you may as well pick it or you could leave it and try to collect the seeds:)

Hello to the new people
The photos look brilliant, puts my tiny peppers to shame! :T
All this talk of swedes makes me want to grow some now too. Will have to have a look through hubby's old seed box and see if I can find some seeds :rotfl:
We had a washout downpour day yesterday, but I'm not complaining since it was the first rain here in ages and it saved me having to water outside. Cloudy today, but still warm. I hope we get some more good weather. Sowed loads of seeds last week from Kings seeds order, but nothing has come up yet.Did another tray of french beans & mangetout yesterday, so hopefully that will crop before the weather turns arctic here in the Autumn.
T&M sent me a £5 off £15 code (one of those "sorry you didn't win" emails from a comp entry). Can hear the credit card calling...0
